Local Information for Dulwich and Broadband and HD TV from Virgin Media
Dulwich is a suburb located for the most part in the London borough of Southwark, although some parts are found in the borough of Lambeth. Dulwich, together with East Dulwich and West Dulwich lie in a fertile valley, between several other suburbs close by. 967 AD is the first recorded mention of the hamlet of Dulwich outside London, and the name is believed to have been taken from ‘Dill’ (a white flower) and ‘wihs’ (damp meadow) so the name would translate to ‘meadow where the dill grows’. Tour this place where the dill grows in your car and explore the delights of Dulwich.
Edward Alleyn, an Elizabethan actor, received spiritual enlightenment and constructed schools and almshouses around Dulwich – many of them bear evidence of their founder’s new found generosity (for example ‘Dulwich College of God’s Goft’, founded in 1619). The original school and almshouses are now attached to a chapel, the Edward Alleyn Chapel, where he is buried.
In 1840 the school was moved to another building to accommodate the expanding number of students – this building is now home to the Estate’s Govenors. In the 1600s the Dulwich Woods were a popular place for Charles I to hunt, and a spa was discovered in 1739. Dulwich Wood was once part of the Great North Wood, and it is said that many oak trees in the wood were owned by the Dulwich College of God’s Gift.
Take your car for a drive around the town and see the various sites that have made Dulwich famous, including popular landmarks and buildings such as Dulwich Park, opened in 1890. This former farmland has been transformed into a pleasant recreational area, including duck ponds, a children’s play ground, a café, and a path for horse riding. Park your car and take a stroll in the fresh air, maybe imagine you’re in the country with the ducks and horses passing you as you walk.
