Until the 19th century and the introduction of rail services, the inner-city district of Holloway was predominantly rural. It was placed along a main cattle route which ran from northern England to Smithfield market. Liverpool Road is home to a number of restaurants and shops, including the saucy Showgirls lingerie shop. However, it was once known as Back Road, an area used to rest and graze cattle.

Holloway’s most famous, and infamous, landmark is HMP Holloway, on Parkhurst Road. Created in 1852, it became a women’s institution in 1902. Many high profile individuals have been held at the prison including: Ruth Ellis, Christable Pankhurst and the author Oscar Wilde.

Nearby, on Parkhurst Road, the heart of Holloway can be found in the Nag’s Head area. Named after a pub located there, it is the home of Nag’s Head Market and Nag’s Head Shopping Centre. The market is ideal for bargain hunting while the mall is home to several well-known UK retailers.

Arsenal Emirates Stadium is located close by. This state-of-the-art facility was opened in 2006 and hosts the Premiership team’s home matches. A number of large-scale concerts by artists including Bruce Springsteen, are planned for 2008.
