Local Information for South Norwood

Map powered by MapPress

Just under eight miles in your car from Charing Cross is the suburb known as South Norwood. Located in the London borough of Croydon, South Norwood is bordered to the north by Upper Norwood, with the most northern point being Beulah Heights, the park contained within this area stretching over both South and Upper Norwood.

The name Norwood is a shortening of the title Great North Wood, which is sometimes also known as the King’s Wood. The wood was a great oak forest, of which little remains today, although place names reflect its existence – including Upper, South and West Norwood, Woodside and Gipsy Hill (as the area was once populated with gypsies). Local legend has it that Sir Francis Drake’s ship, ‘The Golden Hind’, had its wood cut from this forest.

The earliest mention in records of the wood was in 1272, and the most famous tree in the wood was an oak that was used to outline the borders of four parishes – Lambeth, Croydon, Battersea and Camberwell. It was known as the Vicar’s Oak. The tree is thought to have still been alive in 1875, and the spot where it once stood still marks the boundary of Lambeth, Croydon, Camberwell (and now) Bromley boroughs, the location in Crystal Palace Park, at the intersection of Westow and Annerley Hills. Another famous oak tree was the Question Oak, under which theologian Charles Spurgeon used to challenge his students.

Travel around South Norwood in your car and you’ll come across a piece of land known as Brickfields Meadow – a park and lake – which marks the spot where Handley’s Brickworks and its seven towers dominated the skyline for so many years. Then use your car to get to the home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes novels, found in Tennison Road.

You can choose from 3 levels of cover – Value, Standard and Superior with Asda pet care
Asda offer caring bereavement counselling service with your cover

Local Information for South Croydon

South Croydon is a locality located in the London borough of Croydon, and is situated in a valley to the south of central Croydon. South Croydon surrounds the Red Deer pub, and is basically a dormitory suburb for London and Croydon – meaning people sleep and shower at home, and go elsewhere to work and partake in recreational activities. When people speak of South Croydon, they often mean the street known as ‘South End’.

Take a drive in your car and see the sites of South Croydon, including the Whitgift School. The school is located on 45 acres of parkland, and was founded in 1596 by John Whitgift, who was the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Trinity School of John Whitgift, as well as the Old Palace School, were also founded by Whitgift. The school moved to its current location in 1931, at Haling Park. Haling Park was at one time home to the Lord High Admiral of the Fleet, Lord Howard of Effingham. This was the fleet who battled the Spanish Armada.

The Old Palace School was founded in 1889, and is actually the ‘Old Palace’, or Croydon Palace, which was for 500 years the summer home of the Archbishops of Canterbury. Towards the end of the 1800s the Archbishops used Addington Palace as their summer retreat, and the ‘old palace’ was used for many other things (among them a bleaching factory!) before it was given over for educational purposes. It is now an independent girls’ school, supported by the Whitgift Foundation. Park your car and explore the grounds of these historic places.

Another popular attraction in South Croydon is the Swan and Sugarloaf public house. The pub actually stands on the site of an old farmhouse which was once owned by the Archbishops of Canterbury, and legend has it that the name arose when the building was decorated with the old coat of arms of the Bishops, and the Bishop’s mitre was taken to be a sugarloaf and the crook as a swan’s neck. Definitely one not to miss while touring the town in your car.

Local Information for Wallington

Take your car to the Sutton town of Wallington, and the name Wallington is taken from the translation, Waletone, meaning village of the Britons. It dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086, and was held by none other than William the Conqueror.

If you take your car a little north of the current centre of the town, near to the bridge over the River Wandle, you’ll find the centre of the town many years ago. The town’s main industry – the production of lavender oil – is commemorated in many ways in and around Wallington.

Although the industry wound up after the First World War, you’ll find in the town centre a sculpture by Guy Portelli of a lavender plant, at the corner of Woodcote and Stafford Roads. Why not use your car to get to the farmers’ market, held on the second Saturday of each month. Sometimes held in the carpark at Shotfield, but usually outside the old town hall, the market is the best way to see the fresh fruit and vegetables that Wallington has to offer.

If markets aren’t your thing, then use your car to visit the shops in town. The town centre is experiencing a bit of a boom by way of retail – many main banks, building societies and businesses are coming to Wallington, adding to the major chains and stores that are there already. Why not spend the day shopping, in shops such as Sainsburys, Boots and Tesco.

The Irish poet Eileen Shanahan lived in Blenheim Gardens with her family – although most of her poetry remains unpublished, she wrote about things such as children and birth (being a mother of five) and the situation her native Ireland found herself in at the time she lived. Shanahan died in the town of Wallington.

If you are in your car you can use the two-laned Rotherhithe Tunnel to get here and if you are travelling to the Isle of Dogs and the Canary Wharf you can go by train on the Jubilee Line.

This area is home to many people of Scandinavian descent and you will find the St. Olav Church here which is Norwegian. There are also Finnish and Swedish churches that were built in the early part of the 20th century as more and more traders and dockyard workers from the Baltic regions landed here. There are many places of interest that you can visit her with your car like the many old docks and the green area of Russia Dock Park, as well as the wildlife refuge of Canada Water. Stave Hill is an ecological park and woodland area that is beautiful to see.

Local Information for Sutton

Sutton is a very common place name, thought to mean ‘south settlement’ in Saxon, and so there are many ‘Sutton’s in Britain. Others think that Sutton means ‘south enclosure’ in Anglo-Saxon, from the word Sudtone. In Surrey, ‘enclosure’ meant farm, and in Sutton it may have referred to Oldfields farm, and being as it was ‘south’ (it lay on the south side of the ancient Roman road Stane Street, and on the southern slope from Rose Hill to the Angel) the name stuck. Stane Street is now known as the A24, or Stonecot Hill and London Road in the Sutton area. Drive part of the A24 in your car, and imagine what it would have been like so long ago.

In this instance, though, Sutton refers to the principle town in the London borough of Sutton. Sutton is one of a few towns that lie on a bed of thanet sands, the bed stretching from Croydon to Epsom. South of this belt of thanet sands lay the chalk ridges of the North Downs, and north of the thanet sand bed lies clay. The bed of thanet sands allows wells of clean water to be accessed, whereas the clay only provides dirty surface water. Because of this, people settled along the thanet sand bed from very early on.

When the Saxons settled an area, they put in the centre of the settlement the church, manor house and village, then surrounded this with the cultivated fields, then the grazing land on the outside. Because the beds of thanet sands were so narrow, this set up was not possible. So in Sutton the Saxons stretched out their settlements, and as a consequence Sutton is about three miles long but only a mile wide. Ditch the car and walk around the town, exploring the old town centre. If you wish to catch public transport, Sutton is well serviced and with three car parks you can park the car and jump on any number of buses, taxis or trains.

Local Information for Shepperton

Shepperton is located in the Borough of Spelthorne in the County of Surrey. The town lies on the north bank of the River Thames. It gets its name from ‘Shepherds Town’ and one of the town’s older roads is called Sheep Walk. Saxon cemeteries have been found in the area suggesting there were early settlements there. The original village was built around the church square. The church, St. Nicholas Church, was built in 1614. The village eventually expanded to the north with the coming of the railway and railway station.

The town is probably most famous as the home of Shepperton film studios. The studios began producing films in the early 1930’s. Shepperton studios merged with Pinewood Studios in 2002 but the two companies have retained their individual identities. Many of the special effects for the “Da Vinci Code’ were created at Shepperton. The town is also home to the Thamesmead Music School.

The Anchor Hotel, overlooking the Church Square, used to be a popular haunt with the notorious highwayman, Dick Turpin. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor also stayed there when they were filming at Shepperton Studios.

It doesn’t matter where you go in Shepperton, or anywhere else in the London area.

Local Information for Woking

Woking is a civil parish as well as a large town in the London borough of Woking. In the book ‘The Meaning of Liff’ by Douglas Adams, Woking is the word for those frustrating times when you go to your kitchen, but forget why (haven’t we all done that at some time?!). Woking was also where the martians from H.G. Wells’ book ‘War of the Worlds’ landed and Wells lived in Woking.

A sculpture of one of the martians in the Horsell Common, close to the town centre, commemorates this. It also demonstrates the destruction of Woking! Take a trip there in your car to take a peep at it. Rick Parfitt, guitarist for Status Quo, was born in Woking and Fernando Alonso, driver for McLaren, lives in Woking.

Woking serves as a community town for the London commuter belt, which means that people live here and commute to work in London from here. The Car is one way of getting from Woking to London on your daily trip to work! Indeed, Woking is well serviced by the motorways M25 and M3, as well as the A3, so there’s no getting lost in your car.

Woking dates back to 673 AD, and began its life as a settlement for a group of Wessex people. These people followed Wocca, and hence the name.

Woking is made up of several smaller suburbs; however, Old Woking (which is one such suburb) is often considered a separate village, while two sub-towns of Woking, Knaphill and Sheerwater are sometimes considered outer suburbs of Woking.

Horsell Village is a part of Woking, and it is here that the martians landed in ‘War of the Worlds’ – opposite what is now ‘The Sands’ pub on Chertsey Road. Horsell is also home to Horsell Common, one of the last privately owned areas of common land with public access left in England. Take a trip down there in your car rental and spend some time walking in the tranquillity.
