Local Information for New Addington

The area of New Addington is luxurious with plenty of golf courses and estates. There are open fields and parks with lovely houses dating back to the 1930’s. Until then this area was mainly farmland with the three major farms being Castle Hill, Fisher’s Farms and Addington Lodge. The Boots Estate is what many call this area because it was bought by Charles Boot to construct a garden village with churches, houses, schools, shops and a village green. Take a leisurely drive in your car down the streets to see some of the interesting shops.

The first estate that was built there was popular and nicknamed Little Siberia. Local Information for South Croydon

South Croydon is a dormitory suburb of Greater London and as the name suggests is situated to the south of Croydon town centre. Croydon was heavily bombed during World War II and the area is made up of both old and new architecture.

Local Information for Stockwell

Stockwell is an inner city town of London and the A3 major road runs through it. The city was just a manor from the 13th to the 19th century and included a botanical garden and markets. Thamesmead is located on the south bank of the River Thames and is a relatively new town. It was created to provide families in London somewhere to live as part of a slum clearance campaign. This was terminated in 1986 and fell under the non profit Thamesmead Town Limited. Two separate companies took over the area in 2000 for the housing council and for the undeveloped land. Local Information for South Norwood

South Norwood is a suburban development in the London Borough of Croydon.
At one point in the town’s history, over 20 pubs stood within a 1.5-mile radius. Many of these are now closed.

Local information for Sevenoaks

A town in the Sevenoaks District of Kent, Sevenoaks is situated in south east England and makes up part of the London commuter belt, set 21.5 miles away from Charing Cross in the city centre.

On the A21 dual carriageway, Sevenoaks is also connected on the M23 London Orbital motorway on Junction Five. Sevenoaks train station opened on March 2, 1868 and was once the place of an accident on August 24, 1927 when a passenger trail derailed killing 13 people. Dating back to 800AD, Sevenoaks’ name comes from the word Seouenaca, which was a name given to a small chapel in Knole Park. Many people believe the town is named after the seven oak tress wich lined the boundary of the Vine Cricket Ground, six of which were destroyed in the Great Storm of 1987, but this is not true.

Knole Park is a 1000 acre park home to millions of trees and a number of deer. The Knole House estate is now owned by the National Trust but the famous local Sackville family still live there. In January 1967 The Beatles made films for the songs Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane in Knole Park.

Sevenoaks opened its first market in the 13th century, in 1456 Knole House was built by the Archbishop of Canterbury and in the Middle Ages two hospitals were built in the town.

Local Information for Chislehurst

Chislehurst is a village in the London borough of Bromley, and derives its name from the Saxon ‘cisel’ (gravel) and ‘hyrst’ (wooded hill).

Chislehurst is home to Camden Place, which is found at Chislehurst Golf Club. Camden Place is said to be the home of Napoleon III and Empress Eugine, after they were exiled. Their son, Prince Imperial, was born here and is buried next to his father, after being killed in South Africa when his party was ambushed by Zulu warriors.

The Prince’s funeral procession was even more lavish than his father’s, and his mother built The Mortuary Chapel next to Saint Mary’s Church specifically to house the bodies of her husband and son. There are many markers to the Chislehurst connection with Napoleon and his family, in the form of street names and memorials – even the local telephone code 467, in its old form, corresponds to the letters IMP (for Imperial).

Take your car to see the caves at Chislehurst, which extend beyond Chislehurst to Sidcup, some miles away. During the war, a hospital and chapel were built in the caves and they served as a shelter for many people. The caves are thought to have been built by the ancient Britons, and extended by the Romans and Saxons, and that Druids used the caves for religious ceremonies. Some parts of the caves are said to be haunted! Bands such as Status Quo, Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix have played in the caves, and an episode of Doctor Who has been filmed inside.

Local Information for Chipstead

Chipstead is considered to be a village by its residents and lies on the boundary of the Croydon London Borough and Reigate/Banstead. A focal point of the village is the shopping centres as well as the local church of St. Margaret’s. Local Information for Chessington

Chessington can be found in the London borough of Kingston-upon-Thames, and has the Hogsmill River running through it. The name derives from the Anglo-Saxon ‘Cissa dun’, meaning Cissa’s hill.

Enid Blyton lived in Chessington for four years, at 204 Hook Road – a blue plaque commemorates this. Chessington is also home to ‘Chessington World of Adventure’, a family theme park and zoo. Opened in 1987 and owned by Merlin Entertainments, the park is divided into ten themed areas, all with rides and attractions. The park itself closes at times during the year and although the zoo may still be open (bearing in mind the recent outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease), it is best to check to avoid disappointment. While you have your car, pop on down to ‘Chessington’ as it is known, and spend the day having a wild time.

Chessington Hall is also found here, and it was once home to Samuel Crisp. Crisp lived in the house with his friend Christopher Hamilton, after his 1754 play ‘Virginia’ failed and he sold his Hampton house and many of his book and art collection. Crisp was a friend of Charles Burney, father of Fanny Burney, the writer. It is thought that Fanny wrote much of her 1782 book ‘Cecilia’ at Chessington Hall. Crisp died in 1782 and is buried in the church graveyard. The house was demolished in 1832, and a new one constructed on the site. Chessington Hall was said to date back to 1520.
