Local Information for Kingswood

Kingswood is a village in the Borough of Reigate and Banstead in the county of Surrey. The area can be dated back to Saxon times when it was a part of the Royal Borough of Ewell. After the Norman Conquest it became a hunting ground and the forest was designated as a Royal game reserve thus leading to the name Kings Wood.

In 1563 Queen Elizabeth I gave the hamlet of Kingswood to Lord Howard of Effingham. He became Lord High Admiral of the Armada and beacons were lit from Plymouth to London signaling the sighting of the Spanish fleet. The Tumblebeacon pub in Kingswood is on the site of one such beacon.

Between 1570 and 1770, the village became firmly established and rural life flourished.

The village has several independent shops and a large mock-Tudor pub. Kingswood Warren is a 19th century estate in the village and is home to the BBC’s research and development department and the financial services group Legal and General also have a large office in Kingswood.

The village has a railway station but there are no bus services passing through it. It is however a sought after location and residents can still see pheasants on the heath and rabbits in the wood.

Local Information for Morden

Morden is a town in the London Borough of Merton approximately 10 miles south west of Central London.

There is evidence of human activity around Morden in pre-historic times when Celtic tribes are known to have had settlements in the Wimbledon area. The first significant development in Morden’s history came with the construction of the Stane Street Roman Road.

Ethelstan, son of Ethelred the Unready left land to the abbey of Christ and St. Peter in his will. This land later became the site of the first Saxon parish church of St Lawrence.

Morden remained a rural settlement throughout the 19th century and the population was clustered around St. Lawrence’s church. Near the church was The George Inn, now modernized, originally a 17th century coaching inn. The other public house in the village at that time was the Crown Inn situated to the north east of the village.

The main industry was agriculture although there was a little industrial activity along the River Wandle where watermills were used to grind tobacco into snuff. The situation remained the same until the opening of Morden Underground Station in 1926. This signaled the opening up of the village for residential development. The town is now a suburban area although there are some excellent parks and playing fields.

Local Information for Farnborough

It is a commuter town located approximately 14 miles south east of Charing Cross. Most of the old Farnborough Village still remains amid the modern residential developments. Farnborough is well served with transport links into the capital.

The main A21 road from London to East Sussex can be joined from just outside the town and there are 2 railway stations close by. The area is rich in history dating back to Roman times and you can see evidence of this at the Crofton Roman Villa, 2 miles outside Farnborough. Here you can see the remains of 10 rooms as well as many Roman artifacts. One of the nearby attractions is Chislehurst Caves. Situated 4 miles from Farnborough, these ancient caves were originally used to mine flint and chalk.

During the 2nd World War they became the largest air raid shelter outside of London. There is a chapel in the caves and one child was born in the caves during the war. She was given the name Cavina. Pay the caves a visit and you will learn more about the Druids, Saxons and Romans who used to use them.

Local Information for Hounslow

Hounslow is the main town in the Borough of Hounslow west of London. Make use of your car while you have it and hit the shopping centre known as the Treaty Centre and comprising multi-levels of cafes, stores and the local library. Rest in the knowledge that anything you purchase will fit in the back of your car and you won’t have to worry about having it delivered to your home.

Parking won’t be a problem with the multi-level parking station. Indeed, the shopping centre is one of the ten major metropolitan areas outlines in the London Plan which was (and is) a planning document written by the Lord Mayor of London and has in it several objectives (such as, accommodating London’s inevitable growth without encroaching on the green spaces in and around the city, making London a well-designed and green city, easy to access, and prosperous).

Hounslow developed back in the 1200s and then as now most of the income to the town has been via transport and tourism – the Middle Ages saw foot traffic passing through as people travelled between London and the west country. Later on, between the 1600s and 1800s, stage coaches used the town to stop and rest their horses and refresh the drivers and passengers. Nowadays, nearby Heathrow provides jobs for residents – continuing the trend for employment of townsfolk.

Hounslow Heath has always played an important part in the town’s history, with it being popular for hunting among the royals (Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and William III). Later it became popular with armies and barracks, the highwaymen and footpads. Today you can visit the heath in your car and imagine what it would have been like to be held up by a highway robber!

Local Information for Ewell

Ewell is a village in the Borough of Epsom and Ewell in the County of Surrey. Situated close to the border of Greater London it forms part of suburbia. The village still retains a lot of its rural character.

Ewell stands at the head of the Hogshill River, a tributary of the Thames, and the spring is thought to be sacred dating back into pre-history. The old Roman Road, Stane Street, deviated slightly from its traditional straight line to pass the spring. Bronze age remains have been found in Ewell and it is believed a religious site was already present at the time of the Romans arrival.

Tunnels dating back to the English Civil War exist under the village but are poorly documented and are inaccessible.

The most notable landmark in the village is Bourne Hall. This architecturally impressive building in the centre of the village is a circular building with a central glass dome and hosts among other things a public library and a subterranean theatre.

The Borough of Epsom and Ewell was rated the most desirable place to live in the UK in 2005 by a British television programme.

Local Information for Charlton

Charlton is in the London Borough of Greenwich and is thought to get its name from the Saxon for husbandman or farmer. While you have your car, there are a few must-see places in Charlton. Charlton House was built for Sir Adam Newtown, who was the tutor for the young Prince Henry, son of James I and older brother to the future King Charles I. Sir Newton’s son, Henry, was friends with the diarist John Evelyn and Evelyn stated that the house had been built for Prince Henry. Building began on the house in 1607 and it is a fine example of Jacobean architecture. The grounds feature an orangery (now a public toilet) and large green areas begging to be picnicked in. Pop down in your car and make a day of it.

Sir Adam was also responsible for building the nearby Saint Luke’s Church which is the final resting place for the only British Prime Minister to have been assassinated, Spencer Perceval. Edward Drummond is also buried here, after his murderer mistook him for Prime Minister Robert Peel and shot him as he left Peel’s house. Drummond died at Charlton after five days and Daniel M’Naghten, who was tried for his murder was found guilty due to insanity – giving rise to the M’Naughten rules the legal test of insanity used in many common law jurisdictions.

There are also many famous people to have been born in Charlton, so tour the area in your car and see if you can see any Blue Plaques!

Local Information for Esher

Esher is a suburban town in the Surrey Borough of Elmbridge. It was a popular stagecoach stop on the London – Portsmouth Road. The Bear Inn, originally built in the 15th century, is thought to have been a stopover point for Charles II.

During the 16th century, King Henry VIII commandeered the area as a royal hunting ground and this almost destroyed the community.

Claremont Mansion in the town was built by Clive of India in the 18th century. This imposing house was later used as a royal residence by Queen Victoria. The Queen lent the house to the exiled King Louis-Philippe and Queen Marie-Amelie after the French Revolution of 1848.

St George’s Church is Esher’s oldest public building and is one of the earliest Anglican churches in England. It ceased to be the parish church when Christ Church was completed in 1854. It is now in the hands of the Churches Conservation Trust.

Sandown Park Racecourse lies in the town near to the railway station. In addition to horse racing the park also hosts toy fairs and car shows. Other facilities include a golf course and a dry ski slope.

Local Information for Claygate

Claygate is a large village in the County of Surrey. It’s situated equidistantly from Heathrow and Gatwick airports and is served by a good train service into London Waterloo station. It’s a residential and commercial centre with shopping areas, pubs and numerous restaurants. The name comes from the clay pits that used to be in the village. Bricks from here were used in the building of Hampton Court Palace.

Until the late 1800’s, Claygate was largely an agricultural area. The population in 1881 stood at only 778 whereas now it is upward of 7,000. The new railway line between Guildford and London signaled the beginning of residential developments with many mansions being built within the village. The majority of these have since been demolished to make way for smaller housing developments. Just two of the mansions still remain, Loseberry House and Ruxley Towers.

The largest source of employment in the village is the retail sector but many of the shops are family-run businesses and therefore the majority of Claygate’s residents need to commute into central London for work.

Local Information for Chiswick

Chiswick literally means “cheese farm” in the Old English language and was thought to have featured a cheese and dairy fair up until the eighteenth century. Although farming was the start of the area, you’d be hard pressed to find an actual working farm since it is so close to the city of London. Inns and large homes started spotting the landscape and horticulture became a big part of the economy in the early eighteen hundreds.

Chiswick is home to many beautiful churches, gardens and the now famous Arts Educational Schools of London, which focuses on both acting and musical theatre. Sports have not been forgotten as Chiswick has rugby and rowing team that compete and provide a solid source of entertainment for Londoners.

Because Chiswick is located so close to media outlets, many of the historic buildings and landscape are used in both film and television productions. Actor Colin Firth is a resident, and many of the scenes from Love Actually were shot right in the town. Residents are very proud of their notorious heritage and visitors love to learn about it.

Local Information for Highgate

Highgate is noteworthy for many things including for the Georgian architecture and large cemetery at the heart. Many celebrities and political leaders have made it their home in the last twenty years and continue to entice visitors with the beautiful landscapes and amenities.

This suburb located in north London on the northeast corner of Hampstead Heath is divided between three different boroughs. Highgate is definitely one of the more expensive areas and this is evident in the homes, amenities and entertainment venues.

Highgate offers galleries, boutiques, shopping and fine dining in addition to pubs and casual dining outlets. The pub tradition of “swearing on the horns” originated in Highgate, and in Jethro Tull’s song “Cross-Eyed Mary”, he mentions a title character that is referred to as “The Robin Hood of Highgate”. The area is clean and boasts many walking paths, sidewalks, and green spaces to enjoy, and there is always an event in which to partake for both visitors and residents.

Local Information for Banstead

Banstead is a town in the County of Surrey on the border of Greater London. The town is on the North Downs and is protected by the Green Belt. Banstead Downs has been designated as a site of special scientific interest due to its diverse flora and fauna. Although Banstead is a town it is commonly known as Banstead Village.

The area can be dated back to an Anglo Saxon charter of 967AD. At that time the whole manor was valued at GBP8 and consisted of a manor house, a church and a mill. The current parish church was built in the 12th and 13th centuries and still retains its medieval spire. It was a farming area and was well known for its high quality sheep wool.

Banstead Downs were well known for horse racing in the 17th century and the town also gained the reputation as a health resort.

The residents of Banstead tend to fall into the upper middle class bracket as is evidenced by the range of shops in the town. There is very little employment in the town forcing the majority of residents to commute out of the district.

At one point the secondary school in Banstead was one of only two schools in the UK to send ball boys to the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships.

Local Information for Kingston upon Thames

Kingston upon Thames is a busy riverside suburban town on the borders of London and Surrey. The town is situated in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames in Surrey. Originally an ancient market town, Kingston is located 10 miles to the south west of Charing Cross.

Kingston has been rich in history since Roman times. Saxon kings were crowned there and the town received its first Royal charter from King John in 1208. You can still see The Lovekyn Chapel, founded in 1309 by Edward Lovekyn, It is the only private chantry chapel in the country to survive the Reformation. The town received borough status in 1481. Today it’s a bustling retail centre with a small number of commercial offices. You can also find a wide selection of bars and restaurants along the banks of the River Thames.

One of the more unusual sights in Kingston is a sculpture called ‘Out of Order’. This sculpture by David Mach shows several disused red telephone boxes that have been tipped up to lean against one another in an arrangement resembling dominoes.

Hampton Court Palace is on the opposite side of the Thames. A short walk over the Kingston Bridge will take you there. Kingston Rugby Club, founded in 1887, is one of the oldest clubs in England and you can spend an enjoyable Saturday afternoon watching a game
