Local Information for Morden
Morden is a town in the London Borough of Merton approximately 10 miles south west of Central London.
There is evidence of human activity around Morden in pre-historic times when Celtic tribes are known to have had settlements in the Wimbledon area. The first significant development in Morden’s history came with the construction of the Stane Street Roman Road.
Ethelstan, son of Ethelred the Unready left land to the abbey of Christ and St. Peter in his will. This land later became the site of the first Saxon parish church of St Lawrence.
Morden remained a rural settlement throughout the 19th century and the population was clustered around St. Lawrence’s church. Near the church was The George Inn, now modernized, originally a 17th century coaching inn. The other public house in the village at that time was the Crown Inn situated to the north east of the village.
The main industry was agriculture although there was a little industrial activity along the River Wandle where watermills were used to grind tobacco into snuff. The situation remained the same until the opening of Morden Underground Station in 1926. This signaled the opening up of the village for residential development. The town is now a suburban area although there are some excellent parks and playing fields.
