Local Information for Woking

Map powered by MapPress

Woking is a large town with borough status in the County of Surrey. The history of Woking dates back to AD673 when it was a settlement of a Wessex tribe, followers of Wocca. The town has been known under various different names over the ages. Woking has excellent rail links and has now become a popular commuter town for people working in London.

In 1651, the Wey Navigation Canal was opened for traffic from Guildford to the River Thames. This encouraged residential development in the area. The railway arrived in 1838 securing the town’s future as a commuter town.

Woking has an excellent pedestrianised shopping centre that includes the Wolsey and Peacock shopping centers and an open-air market. Night life in the town is centered around the Chertsey Road area. Here you’ll find several restaurants and bars as well as the Ambassadors Cinemas and the New Victoria Theatre.

The McLaren Formula One racing team has its base near Woking as does Raikkonen Robertson Racing, the Formula Three team begun by Kimi Raikkonen.

Probably the most famous resident of Woking was the author H. G. Wells. In his book, ‘The War of the Worlds’ the Martians landed at Horsell common near Woking. There is a large sculpture of a Martian spaceship in the town that immortalizes this incident.

Local Information for Stockwell

Located in the London Borough of Lambeth is Stockwell and was home to Violette Szabo a heroine of the French Resistance. Szabo was an undercover agent in France, a member of the Special Operations Executive (SEO), and given the code name ‘Louise’. While in France she met and was briefed by Leo Marks, who is credited with giving her the definitive World War II code poem, “The Life That I Have”. This was an original poem written on Christmas Eve in 1943 by Marks, and used to hide secret messages (famous poems were used to encrypt messages, but this proved fallible as the enemy’s cryptographers could find the original poem and work out the hidden messages).

The poem was written in memory of a girlfriend who died in a plane crash and given to Szabo in 1943. Szabo was eventually captured by the Nazis, tortured, placed in a concentration camp and put to death in 1945. Szabo was the second woman to be awarded the George Cross (1946), and she also received the Croix de Guerre (1947) and The Médaille de la Résistance (1973). The Violette Szabo GC Museum is in Herefordshire and a movie about her was made in 1958, ‘Carve Her Name With Pride’.

Other famous residents include author Will Self, actor Roger Moore, comedian Adam Buxton and Lilian Baylis (the manager of an opera, theatre and ballet company which later became the English National Opera, English National Theatre and English Royal Ballet respectively).

Local Information for Sheen

One of the finalists in our search for the Most Confusing Name History is certainly Sheen… Or is that East Sheen… Or Richmond…? Grab a pot of tea, this could take a while!

Sheen wasn’t listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, but it was listed as ‘Sceon’ in 950AD, and means ‘shed’ or ‘shelters’. Henry VII had a manor (house) in Sheen (or ‘Shene’, a royal manor of the Plantagenets), but in 1497 it was destroyed in a fire. He built a new castle and called it Richmond after his favourite castle in Yorkshire (called Richmond). This new Richmond in Surrey was the second Richmond, the third oldest is in Virginia, U.S.A.

West Sheen is an earlier name for Richmond. Sheen is now used for the east end of Richmond town. East Sheen is called Sheen too. East Sheen was designated as a separate town from West Sheen as early as the 1200s. North Sheen was created in 1894, and first appeared on maps in 1904. Richmond is the main settlement in the borough of Richmond-Upon-Thames.

Confused yet? The thing to remember is that when talking about Sheen, you’re really talking about Richmond. And there is a long royal history connected to Richmond/Sheen. Henry I stayed in the King’s house in Shene/Sheen, and in 1310 the Percy family from Northumberland received a barony at Sheen as a reward for loyalty. The Percy family were one of the most powerful families in Northern England during the Middle Ages. Richmond Park, one of the largest Royal Parks in England, is found here.

Local Information for Thornton Heath

Farms, cottages and grazing livestock made up the scenery of Thornton Heath until the mid 1860s when the railway came to town. Known as a highwayman haven because of its desolate nature, a gallows was even found where many of these ruffians were hanged after being caught hiding in the vast countryside. The “new” Thornton Heath is a far cry from its early years as it is now one of the most popular multicultural areas in Croydon.

Sports are a big part of life in Thornton Heath and a brand new sports center recently replaced a smaller, deteriorating building. Many athletic and sports teams are located here including the Crystal Palace Football Club, South London Storm Rugby League Club, Gonville Sports Club-Bowling Green, and the Croydon Athletic Football Club. The sports venues attract visitors from all around London, and have been a big boost to the shopping and dining spots as well. Parking is available for your car, but you may have to allow extra time to find a spot during a large sporting event.

Local Information for Wallington

Wallington is a town in the London Borough of Sutton. The name derives from the Anglo Saxon ‘Waletone’ meaning ‘village of the Britons’. Wallington was mentioned in the Domesday Book and the old village was located around the bridge over the River Wandle.

A railway station was opened in 1847 in fields to the south of Wallington. This led to the development of the area. In the 1860’s a prestigious estate of gothic revival villas and the Holy Trinity Church were created by Nathaniel Bridges. Development continued and by the time of World War I, the new high street had been created to the south of the station. The town hall and public library were built in the 1930’s.

Pre-World War I, Wallington was an important centre for the production of lavender oil. At the junction of Woodcote Road and Stafford Road there is a large sculpture representing a lavender plant to commemorate those days. The town’s Christmas lights also represent lavender plants.

There is a regular farmers market on the second Saturday of each month which takes place outside the town hall. The town also has several High Street stores and many major banks and building societies.

Another entrant in our quest for London’s Most Unusual Suburb Name is Nork. Located in the Borough of Reigate and Banstead Nork was the former home of David Walliams of ‘Little Britain’ fame.

Walliams was born in 1971 as David Williams (and had to change his name for Actor’s Equity as there was already a David Williams listed). Raised in Banstead and educated in Reigate Grammar School Walliams met his comedic partner Matt Lucas at the University of Bristol and on July 4th 2006 he (Walliams not Lucas) trained for nine months and successfully swam the English Channel to raise money for Sport Relief – an offshoot of Comic Relief where famous people raise money to fight poverty in England and Africa.

His effort took 10 hours and 34 minutes and raised over £1,000,000 in donations. Even more outstanding is the fact that he trained for the swim while doing his ‘Little Britain Live’ show travelling the United Kingdom.

Nork is also home to Nork Park which is home to Nork House and was home to the managing director of Coleman’s Mustards, F.E. Coleman. Coleman bought the house in 1890 and lived there with his family until 1923. Only remains remain, but pop in while you have your car and picnic in the grounds for a relaxing day out.

Local Information for Mayfair

The name Mayfair literally came about as a result of the May Fair that took place from 1686 to 1764 and showcased the local landscape, florals and gardens. Today, the district is primarily commercial and is a far cry from the rural ambience of the seventeenth century. Many of the local offices have been converted from homes, and others are brand new and house many corporate headquarters. The financial industry seems to thrive in Mayfair and many hedge fund companies can be found along the streets. Weekends and evenings become a magnet for tourists and families making parking a bit difficult if you don’t know where to look.

There is so much to see and do in historic Mayfair and if you agree you’d be in good company. Famous residents have included Queen Elizabeth II, John Adams, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Jimmy Hendrix to name a few that fell in love with the area.

Local Information for Twickenham

Twickenham is a suburban town situated in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It is probably best known as the home of Twickenham Stadium, the headquarters of the Rugby Football Union. There are a very large number of public houses and eateries in the area. It is also the home of the Royal Military School of Music.

The area was occupied as early as the Neolithic period and settlements continued throughout the Bronze and Iron Age to the Roman occupation. Twickenham suffered from the Bubonic Plague in 1605 with 67 deaths being recorded. In the middle of the town there was a Watch House with stocks, a pillory and a whipping post designed to give correction to all beggars and vagabonds. In 1665, the plague struck Twickenham again. This time 24 deaths were recorded.

By the 18th century the main industry was the manufacture of gunpowder. This led to frequent explosions and loss of life with explosions being felt as far away as Reading. The gunpowder mills remained in operation until 1927. The 18th and 19th century saw fine houses being built as Twickenham became a popular place to live with people of ‘Fashion and Distinction’.

Nowadays Twickenham has a large and expensive residential area full of exclusive housing to the east and west of the town and an area of 1930’s housing to the north.

Local Information for Chertsey

Map powered by MapPress

Chertsey is a town in the County of Surrey and is situated on the River Thames.

The town grew up around Chertsey Abbey, founded by the then Bishop of London, Eorcenwald in 666. It is one of the oldest towns in England. The Abbey became one of the largest Bendictine abbeys in England until it was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1536. The King used some of the stone from the Abbey to construct Oatlands Palace. The site was later given to Sir William Fitzwilliam and now only slight traces remain amongst later buildings.

One of the Abbey’s bells, weighing just over half a ton, is still in use at St. Peter’s church and is one of the oldest bells still in use in the county.

Chertsey has also featured in literature. It was destroyed by attacking Martians in H. G. Wells’ book, ‘The War of the Worlds’.

The popular tourist attraction, Thorpe Park, is also in the town. Thorpe Park was the UK’s first theme park and features a vast array of thrill seekers rides.

Local Information for Richmond

Richmond is a town in the London Borough of the same name 8.3 miles south west of Charing Cross.

Royal associations with Richmond date back over 900 years. Henry I lived briefly in Sheen, now the eastern end of Richmond town. Richard II was the first English king to make the Sheen manor house his main residence. The house was rebuilt between 1414 and 1422 but in 1497 it was destroyed by fire.

It was Henry VII who named Richmond, after his favourite Earldom, Richmond in Yorkshire. Henry rebuilt the manor house and renamed it Richmond Palace. It was not used again after 1649. The Gate House to his Palace, which was built in 1501, still remains on Richmond Green.

The Green used to be the venue for many tournaments and archery contests. The first inter-county cricket match was played there in 1730 between Surrey and Middlesex.

Richmond Park is one of the few remaining vestiges of great oak forests that used to surround London. In 1657 Charles I enclosed the royal park as a hunting ground. Today the park covers 2,500 acres and its home to herds of fallow and red deer as well as foxes and badgers.

Local Information for Southfields

Located in the London Borough of Wandsworth, Southfields gets it’s name from an historical class system which reference the “south fields” of the manor of Dunsford and dates all the way back to 1247. The area was still primarily woods until the late nineteenth century, but the railway system spurred growth in the area, and it quickly became a hub for building. This vast growth has somewhat limited parking to a few street spots, and a few large lots for your car.

The main residential area of Southfields is known as “The Grid” since it is a series of parallel roads that make up a grid at their intersections. This same area is made up of mostly large Victorian style homes and some have been converted to much sought after flats.

Pubs were prohibited from being built by a city ordinance until the late 1990’s, but that has since been lifted and now many of the popular watering holes dot the streets. Home prices have risen drastically in recent years due to the great schools and transportation choices. There is a large South African population in Southfields, mostly due to the proximity to Wimbledon and love of sports. A few famous residents include author Paul Richards, Rugby player Will Greenwood and comedian Paul Merton to name a few.

These are carefully incorporated into the smooth silk-feel lining, designed to mould to your body and to accentuate your silhouette.

Further craftsmanship can be noted on the shoulder detail, as the epaulettes complete the sleek and modern style look. Also, zip features are used on the base of the sleeve, should you choose to adopt a slightly more edgy and jaunty appearance. It should also be noted that the jet-black leather jacket has ribbed trim at the base, with 98% cotton and 2% elastane.

Jsen Wintle is a leading London designer brand, specialising in creating the most elite menswear, and for £225 the high quality leather jacket could be yours. Through Jsen Wintle’s collaboration with Marks and Spencer, his most recent collection of modern appearance items is available both in-store and online to create instant confidence and style.

Local Information for Sevenoaks

Sevenoaks is a town in the County of Kent. It is located 21.5 miles south east of Charing Cross and its proximity to the capital makes it part of the London commuter belt. The name dates back to the early 8th century and comes from the Saxon word ‘Seouenaca’ a small chapel near seven oak trees in Knole Park.

Thomas Bourchier, the Archbishop of Canterbury, bought the Knole estate in 1456 and built Knole House. The estate, which is maintained by the National Trust, is a 1000 acre park inhabited by deer. Knole House has been the home of the Earls of Dorset since 1577 and although the estate is owned by the National Trust, the family still lives there. The Beatles made two promotional films in the Park in January 1967.

In 1902 several sets of seven oak trees were planted in the town to commemorate the Coronation of King Edward VII.

Although the majority of local residents commute into London for work, the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory research facility is based at Fort Halstead overlooking the town.

During the great storm of 1987, six of the seven oak trees around the Vine were blown down. Seven small saplings were planted but six of these did not survive. The District Council then planted another seven, more mature, trees. So the Vine now has nine oak trees in a row instead of the original seven.

Local Information for Woolwich

Woolwich is a suburb in south-east London, England in the London Borough of Greenwich, on the south side of the River Thames, though the tiny exclave of North Woolwich (which is now part of the London Borough of Newham) is on the north side of the river.

This is a place rich with the history of Britain’s military past. It was home to the Woolwich Dockyard (founded in 1512), the Royal Arsenal (dating back to 1671), the Royal Military Academy (1741) and the Royal Horse Artillery (1793); the town still retains an army base at the Royal Artillery Barracks, and the Royal Artillery Museum. The nearby Greenwich Heritage Centre also houses exhibits relating to the Royal Arsenal.

The combination of optimistic redevelopment of much of Woolwich and the fact that the 2012 Summer Olympics will include Woolwich as a venue for shooting events means changes and a new modern face for the city.

Local Information for Rotherhithe

n the south-east London Borough of Southwark lies the town of Rotherhithe, so named for (either) ‘landing place for cattle’ or ‘sailor haven’. Rotherhithe is located on a peninsula on the southern bank of the River Thames.

The area is sometimes referred to as ‘Surrey Docks’ due to the Surrey Commercial Docks that once covered the area. Since the 1980s, the area is also called Surrey Quays, but this usually refers to the south of the peninsula. Rotherhithe is also known as Redriff – which is the birthplace of Gulliver, from “Gulliver’s Travels”.

Rotherhithe is connected to the northern bank of the Thames by three tunnels, one of the (the Thames Tunnel to Wapping) was the first underwater tunnel in the world, originally built as a pedestrian tunnel. It is now a tunnel for the underground (rail system). The Rotherhithe Tunnel opened in 1908 and links to Limehouse via a two lane road. The Jubilee Line opened in 1999 and is a railway tunnel to the Canary Wharf in the Isle of Dogs.

Due to the strong Scandinavian presence in the docks, the area still has a thriving community. There are still Nordic influences around, some strong, some vague: community centres, churches, street and building names and architecture all point towards a strong connection formed with trades when the docks existed.

Perhaps you can take your car on a tour of Rotherhithe and find the homes of famous people and places – Max Bygraves and Michael Caine were both born here and at the end of Oliver Twist there is a description of Rotherhithe’s 1800s slum areas.
