Local Information for Stockwell

Located in the London Borough of Lambeth is Stockwell and was home to Violette Szabo a heroine of the French Resistance. Szabo was an undercover agent in France, a member of the Special Operations Executive (SEO), and given the code name ‘Louise’. While in France she met and was briefed by Leo Marks, who is credited with giving her the definitive World War II code poem, “The Life That I Have”. This was an original poem written on Christmas Eve in 1943 by Marks, and used to hide secret messages (famous poems were used to encrypt messages, but this proved fallible as the enemy’s cryptographers could find the original poem and work out the hidden messages).

The poem was written in memory of a girlfriend who died in a plane crash and given to Szabo in 1943. Szabo was eventually captured by the Nazis, tortured, placed in a concentration camp and put to death in 1945. Szabo was the second woman to be awarded the George Cross (1946), and she also received the Croix de Guerre (1947) and The Médaille de la Résistance (1973). The Violette Szabo GC Museum is in Herefordshire and a movie about her was made in 1958, ‘Carve Her Name With Pride’.

Other famous residents include author Will Self, actor Roger Moore, comedian Adam Buxton and Lilian Baylis (the manager of an opera, theatre and ballet company which later became the English National Opera, English National Theatre and English Royal Ballet respectively).
