Local Information for West Ealing

Map powered by MapPress

Located in the west London Borough of Ealing is the town of West Ealing. West Ealing as it exists today is less than 100 years old. In 1234 there was a hamlet called West Ealing, but the name changed to Ealing Dean and references to this name go back to 1456. On a parish map of Ealing, Ealing Dean appears in 1777. In 1871 West Ealing station began its life as Castle Hill and Ealing Dean Station.

An important road ran through the area, which later became Uxbridge Road, and during the 1800s it was a stopping place for stage coaches. Indeed, the London to Banbury and Oxford coach stopped along here at the Halfway House, now called the Broadwalk Hotel (although the old name can still be seen at the top of the building). The pub is now an Iceland but was once called the Green Man, and reportedly had stables for 100 horses. Why not drive along Uxbridge Road in your car and stop for a pint at the old refreshment centers?

Also in the 1800s was the development of market gardens, the remnants of this can be seen in the old ‘Steel’s Fruit Packing Warehouse’, which has barely changed over time.

In 1882 the Ealing Lawn Tennis Club began, and produced three players that won between them 13 Wimbledon Singles titles from 1886 to 1906. Blanche Bingley, Charlotte Cooper and Dorothea Douglass were products of the most successful ladies lawn tennis club in the world.

Local Information for West End

Map powered by MapPress

West End is an under utilized portion of Oxford, and many do not feel it matches the worldwide popularity of Oxford as a whole. Government and residents agree that West End could be a vital part of the city, but requires focus and a long term plan to get there. This exciting project was just in July of 2007 when an Area Action Plan was presented, and requested work to begin by the end of the year.

The plans include rejuvenation of the areas gardens and green spaces, renovation of some of the older buildings and homes, and safer streets to prevent crime. Just by driving through, it is apparent that West End is rich with history and culture and needs a major facelift to blend in with the rest of affluent Oxford.

Currently, residents of West End are primarily transient but the action plan includes detailed guidelines on how to better serve current and future residents.

Forming an ancient path from London to Waltham Abbey are a series of streets passing north-south through Walthamstow and its neighbouring towns (Leyton High Road, Hoe Street, Chingford Road and Chingford Mount). Travel the new roads in your car for an old insight into how people made the trek from the city to the church.

Local Information for North Kensington

Map powered by MapPress

North Kensington is located in the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and situated between Notting Hill Gate and Harrow Road. In fact, North Kensington is the key neighbourhood in Notting Hill. It was where the majority of the violence of the Notting Hill Race Riots in 1958 occurred and where the subsequent Notting Hill Carnival (initiated to bring the community back together after the riots) began, and where most of the film ‘Notting Hill’ was shot. When real estate agents refer to ‘Notting Hill’ as being the affluent area to buy in, they are in actual fact referring to the areas of Notting Hill Gate and Holland Park.

While you have your car why not pop along to the Portobello Road Markets and pick yourself up an antique or three. The antiques market – the largest in the world – is open every Saturday, but the shops are open six days a week. The shops sell fruit and vegetables, so make good use of your car while you have it and stock up, knowing everything you purchase will fit comfortably in the back.

Local Information for South Woodford

Travel to the London Borough of Redbridge – South Woodford in your car and explore the town that dates back to Saxon times – if not before!

Sir Winston Churchill was a former resident of Woodford. Churchill was an orator, writer, politician (being the British Prime Minister), painter and a second lieutenant in the army. He saw active service and doubled as a war correspondent. He was for some time the First Lord of the Admiralty and served as Prime Minister during WWII. An MP for Woodford, Churchill overcame a stroke to continue as Prime Minister and eventually succumbed to a severe stroke, passing 70 years to the day after his father. Local Information for Chislehurst

Chislehurst is a village in the London Borough of Bromley. The name is derived from the Saxon ‘cisel’ meaning gravel and ‘hyrst’ meaning wooded hill.

Camden Place, now a golf club, is where Napoleon III, the French Emperor, died in exile in 1873. His body was originally buried in St Mary’s church before it was removed to Farnborough Abbey. There is a memorial to him in the woods and many street names in Chislehurst are connected to the imperial family.

One of the local attractions is Chislehurst Caves. These ancient caves were originally used to mine flint and chalk. During the 2nd World War, thousands of people used them as nightly air raid shelters. There is a chapel in the caves and one child was born in the caves during the war. She was given the name Cavina. The caves are said to be haunted.

Jimi Hendrix, The Who and The Rolling Stones have all performed live in the caves and a number of television programmes and films have been filmed there.

Malcolm Campbell, the former land and water speed record holder was born in the village and is buried in St. Nicholas Parish church.

Local Information for Cricklewood

The district named Cricklewood is north of London and shares its boundaries with three boroughs. It has grown over the years from a small settlement where two roads intersected between two estates, to the large spanse of land it encompasses today. Known as the “land of the true gentleman”, Cricklewood was home to a beautiful floral path, or “pleasure gardens” as it was once called and cottages began to spring up around it. Only in the 1930’s did it become a full-fledged town with its own railway, homes and industry.

Today, an area known as Production Village provides services to the film and TV industry and several factories which employ a large number of the towns residents. The first Smith’s Potato Crisps were manufactured here and Clang Electrical Goods Ltd. was also headquartered here but has since left as the area went into severe decline. Now a mix of independent businesses and some farms, Cricklewood remains a beautiful place to live and visit. Parking is fairly easy for your car and can be found in car parks or on the streets.
