Local Information for Surbiton
Surbiton is a suburb of London, situated in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. It is a mixture of Art-Deco courts, 19th century town houses and 20th century housing estates.
There is evidence of a settlement in Surbiton as far back as 1179. Prior to the arrival of the railway, the town was a rural area of farms, some brick kilns, a few very large houses and 2 pubs; the Waggon and Horses and the Plough Inn.
Surbiton railway station opened in 1838 and the town began to prosper. Surbiton stands on the main line linking London with Portsmouth and Southampton.
Most of the development was financed by Coutts’ Bank. As well as housing, they provided the land and most of the funds to build St. Mark’s Church. Two schools were also built “for the poor of the parish”, one for boys, and one for girls and infants.
During the 2nd World War, Surbiton suffered from bomb damage mainly close to the railway line. One bomb well through the middle of the roof of St. Mark’s Church. The church could not be saved. A temporary church was built in 1949 and a new permanent church was eventually opened in 1960.
