Local Information for Chessington

Chessington is a town in the Greater London Borough of Kingston upon Thames. During the 18th century Chessington was a tiny village that stood on a large and nearly desolate common. Now it is part of the urban sprawl of Greater London.

Chessington Hall was a country house in the village and between 1754 and 1783 was the home to the failed playwright Samuel Crisp. He is buried in the churchyard in Chessington and commemorated by a memorial in the church. The original hall, dating back to 1520 was demolished in 1832 and replaced by a newer building. This in turn was demolished in 1965 and a housing estate built on the estate grounds.

Today the best know attraction in the town is Chessington World of Adventures. This is a family theme park and zoo which is open to the public from March to October each year. The park is split into ten individually themed areas. Also within the park you can see an English civil war mansion, Burnt Stub.

The former formula one team Brabham used to have their factory in Chessington. This has now been taken over by the Carlin DPR GP2 team.

The author Enid Blyton lived at 207 Hook Road between 1920 and 1924. The house sports a Blue Plaque commemorating this
