Local Information for Belgravia
Just to the south west of Buckingham Palace is the gorgeously extravagant area of Belgravia. The developer of Belgravia was Lord Grosvenor and the name Belgravia came from a village on his Leicestershire estate. Built by Thomas Cubitt, Belgravia is focussed around Eaton and Belgrave Square (the latter is accessible by key holder only, so don’t plan on wandering in for a look!). It was, and still is, one of London’s most fashionable areas for people to live in and this is reflected in the residents it boasts, past and present.
Prime Ministers, composers, actors, authors, poets, the United Kingdom’s second richest man and many currently famous people (for example Sarah Brightman, Margaret Thatcher, Nigella Lawson, Joan Collins, Elle McPherson and Lady Helen Taylor) have all lived in, or live in, Belgravia.
The area is famous for its buildings of white, beautiful green gardens hidden from the public and being a relatively quiet place in the bustling and busy capital. After WWII some homes ceased to be used as residences, but restrictions were placed on what they could be used for, so they became embassies, charity headquarters and professional institutes. Some of these office spaces are going back to residences, as there are increasing numbers of wealthy (and offices in old homes are not as fashionable as they once were). Some of the larger homes in Belgravia are among the most expensive in the world, often costing more than £15 million.
