Walton-on-Thames is a town in the Elmbridge Borough of the County of Surrey. It is situated 15.3 miles south west of Charing Cross with the River Thames to its north. The original village lies along the banks of the river.

The town dates back to Celtic times with the Anglo Saxons referring to these early inhabitants as ‘Wealas”. By the time of the Domesday Book the town was referred to as ‘Waletone’. St. Mary’s Parish Church is of Saxon origin, with parts dating back to the 12th century. The square flint tower contains six bells, the oldest bearing the date 1606. A mile upstream was the Royal Palace of Oatlands that Henry VIII built in 1538. The Oatlands Park Hotel now occupies the site of the old palace.

Hersham and Walton Motors, the racing car constructor in the 1950’s, were based in the town. Stirling Moss won his first F1 Grand Prix in an HWM. The company is now an Audi and Aston Martin dealership.

The town centre has recently undergone re-development with the construction of a shopping mall and small apartments. The main part of the centre now has several well known brand retailers.
