Local Information for Staines

Staines is a town in the Spelthorne Brough of Surrey on the south side of the River Thames. Because of its proximity to London and Heathrow a number of well known companies have set up their national headquarters there.

The Romans settled in Staines in 43 AD and shortly afterwards the first Staines Bridge was constructed over the River Thames. Because of its location the town has long been involved in national affairs. Sir Thomas More was tried for high treason in a public house there in 1535.

Stoneleigh is a small area in Surrey situated in the Epsom and Ewell district. The village was developed around the Stoneleigh Railway Station and the Broadway. Local Information for Edenbridge

Edenbridge lies on the banks of the River Eden on the Kent/Surrey border. It is situated in the Sevenoaks district of Kent.

The village was originally a crossing point over the river that was used by the Romans to transport wood and iron from Ashdown Forest to London. The town started to regain its wealth in the mid 1800’s with the advent of the railways. Edenbridge was the crossing point for the north – south and the east – west railway lines making it a loading point for local produce. The railway also enabled commuters to relocate to the town and travel daily to the capital for work.

Many medieval timber buildings still remain in the town, one of which houses the Eden Valley Museum which tells the story of the Eden Valley, its people, buildings and natural environment.

Local Information for Carshalton

Carshalton is a London suburb situated in the London Borough of Sutton. It is located in the River Wandle valley.

Neolithic and Iron Age artifacts have been found to the south of Carshalton and prior to 1066 records show that there were five manors in the area. Carshalton was well known for its natural wells and springs and the land was primarily put to arable use.

Carshalton relied on water power from the River Wandle. As far back as the 11th century there are records of a water mill to grind corn. By the end of the 18th century there were several mills for the production of paper, leather and seed-oil. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Carshalton was known for its lavender fields.

Central Carshalton still retains a village character with a number of attractive buildings and open spaces. The main residential area is Carshalton-on-the-Hill to the south of Carshalton Park.

The current parish church contains 12th century work but has been extended over the years. Just outside the churchyard wall is a spring known as ‘Anne Boleyn’s Well’. Local legend states that it received its name when Anne Boleyn’s horse kicked a stone and a spring of water appeared.

Local Information for Motspur Park

Motspur Park, also known as West Barnes is a suburb of South West London. Until the end of the 19th century it was a rural area. That situation didn’t begin to change until the railway station was built. Although the railway was constructed through the town in 1859, Motspur Park station was not added until the early part of the 20th century.

Two of London’s natural water courses run through the area. The Beverley Brook and its smaller tributary, the Pyl Brook. These have been known to cause local flooding.

England’s first dual carriageway, the Kingston Bypass, was built in 1926 just north of the town. This prompted further residential development in the town. The area finally began suburban development between the two world wars, with rows of terraced houses being constructed.

There is only one public house in Motspur Park, The Earl Beatty, named after David Beatty who commanded a significant part of the British naval fleet at the Battle of Jutland.

Motspur Park has several playing fields. Probably the most famous is Fulham football club’s training ground. Originally an athletics ground, owned by the University of London, it was used in the film ‘Chariots of Fire’.
