Marylebone is located in the London Borough of Westminster and its name is derived from a church, Saint Mary’s, which was built by a small river (or ‘bourne’) called Tybourne. The town the church was built in was named after the river, Tyburn. The church and the area around it became known as ‘Saint Mary at the Bourne’. Over time the town’s name was contracted to Marylebone. Use your car to travel to the All Souls Church designed by John Nash.

Nash was an architect and primarily designed in the ‘Regency’ Period – the era defined as being when George III was ruled unfit for the crown and his son (who became George IV) was Prince Regent. A Prince Regent was a Prince who was not officially the King but ruled as such due to the Monarch being unable to rule for some reason – in the case of George III, mental instability.

Other reasons might have been the King being out of the country due to war or exile. But The Prince of Wales remained Prince Regent until his father’s death in 1820 when he succeeded to the throne and became King George IV. Nash’s work was noticed by the young Prince Regent and commissioned him to work on the Marylebone Park area. The resulting Regent Street and Regent’s Park were named after the Prince
