Addiscombe is in the London Borough of Croydon and is largely a commuter suburb due to its many train and bus links to Central London, Croydon and Wimbledon.

The house Addiscombe Place was built in 1702 replacing an Elizabethan mansion that stood there at the corner of Outram Road and Mulberry Lane. In 1809 it was sold to the British East India Company which imported tea, coffee, silk, spices and cotton.

As the company kept their own private army, the house became a Military Seminary where officers received training before travelling to India. After the Indian Rebellion (otherwise known as the First War of Indian Independence, or the Indian Mutiny) the company ceased to be in 1857. There are five roads south of the house named after people who were prominent in the suppression of the mutiny – Outram, Havelock, Elgin, Clyde and Canning Roads. Oddly, these people were not actually part of the college run by the British East India Company.

In 1863 the house was demolished, and all that now remains are the buildings on the corner of Clyde and Addiscombe Roads, “Ashleigh” and “India”. The old gym on Havelock Road is now private apartments.

Acton is a suburb of London and is located over two boroughs – East Acton is in Hammersmith and Fullham, while the rest and majority of Acton lies in Ealing. Near Weybridge, in the Surrey Borough of Elmbridge, lies Brooklands. A disused racing circuit and airfield, it is now a museum for the same. Opened in 1907, Brooklands Aerodrome and Race Circuit were brought to life by Hugh Locke-King and was the first custom-built banked track in the world. And, by only about two months, it was the second oval track for cars.

Along the centre of the track was a dotted line – called the fifty foot line – and by driving over the line, a driver could theoretically take corners without steering. During WWII fuel rationing meant the races had to be stopped, and by the time the war was finished the new cars were deemed too fast for the banked track. A preservation order in 2001 meant the remaining sections of the track were protected.

Brooklands Aerodrome is also one of England’s first airfields. In 1908, it hosted the first flight of a British plane by a British pilot. In 1910 the first British flying school was opened, and in 1912 Sopwith School of Flying opened. Later that year the Sopwith Aviation Company opened. Now, the first Concorde ever built is housed here, and many of the planes kept here were built at Brooklands.

West Ewell at the end of the 19th century was known as Upper and Lower Marsh. The area consisted mainly of farmland including Park Farm, Fitznell’s Farm, Poplar Farm and Scott’s Farm. There were a few dwellings, which were mostly the homes formerly occupied by workers at the nearby Gunpowder mills on the Hogsmill. Two explosions, and an inquest took a toll in the 1860’s, and the area was slowly rebuilt.

The earliest part of the church was constructed in the 13th century and many additions have been made since.

While public transportation to Croydon is efficient, it does not provide adequate routes to nearby towns such as Warlingham, Selsdon and Hamsey Green. When exploring the area, a car is recommended to allow you to travel independently.
