Local Information for West Ewell
Banstead is a town in Surrey that borders on Greater London and is located in the Borough of Reigate and Banstead. Banstead is on the North Downs, a ridge of chalk hills stretching from Kent through Surrey to Hampshire for 120 miles. They have been named as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
Take your car to see Banstead Downs, located to the north of Banstead, and declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Home to a rare species of butterfly, the Downs are one quarter of the Banstead Commons, and on the Gally Hills (so called because a gallows once stood on the land) can be seen four mounds – burial places dating back to Saxon times.
Although technically a town, it is sometimes referred to as Banstead Village. The old village well dates back to the 1700s, and still has the original mechanism and is almost 300 feet deep. The All Saints church was built around the 1100s, so take your car with your family and see the local sites in and around Banstead, your home town (or village!).
