Local Information for Sutton

When the Saxons settled in an area they preferred to have their parishes surrounding the manor house, church and village. Then outside the parishes were the fields, then common grazing outside the fields. But because Sutton is settled in a narrow belt of Thanet sand that provided clean drinkable water (the south is the chalk downs, to the north is clay), the settlements on the belt had to be long and narrow instead of square.

Because of this, Sutton is about three miles long by a mile wide. Evidence exists to suggest settlement of the area about 10,000 years ago, but more substantial evidence came from an excavation in nearby Beddington, of a Roman villa. The old Roman road of Stane Street forms the boundary of Sutton.

In the late 1600s, the Manor of Sutton (then called Sudtone, or ‘south enclosure’ in Anglo-Saxon, as it was south of Stane Street) was given to Chertsey Abbey.

As with many other towns of the time, the railway opened up Sutton like nothing else had – in 1847, new housing was constructed in the ‘New Town’, and a pub called ‘The New Town’ now stands at the site.
