Local Information for Hackney

Hackney Central refers to the central area of the London Borough of Hackney and is distinguished from South Hackney, Hackney Wick and West Hackney. It would have at some stage referred to Hackney village, but now also encompasses the borough of Hackney. The name came from the Saxon ‘Haca’s ey’, meaning raised land in marshland.

The medieval village would have been built surrounding the church of Saint Augustine, the tower of which is the only remaining piece of this 1200s building.

The church was located on Church Street, which is now called the Narrow Way, and was one obstacle that prevented the village of Hackney from expanding, the other obstacles being Hackney Brook and the surrounding villages. By 1724, the village still revolved around a single street, with stately homes and inns forming an unbroken line along the road, and magnificent gardens hidden behind them. Come Victorian times, though, a change was in the air and Hackney graduated from rural to town: estates were dissolved to form streets and terraced housing, and the change was sealed in 1850 with the arrival of the railway, and trams appearing in the 1870s.

Nowadays, Church Street – or the Narrow Way – remains a thriving shopping area, and in a nearby street is found a Tesco, the company having its roots in Hackney.

Local Information for Edenbridge

Edenbridge lies on the banks of the River Eden on the Kent/Surrey border. It is situated in the Sevenoaks district of Kent.

The village was originally a crossing point over the river that was used by the Romans to transport wood and iron from Ashdown Forest to London. Brockley is located in the London district of Lewisham and the name originates from the old English word for badger or the “woods where badgers are seen”. Local Information for Dulwich

The prosperous settlement of Dulwich is really divided into three parts: East Dulwich, West Dulwich and Dulwich Village, which still contains the original main street. The main reason for the village division is simply home prices. Homes directly across the street from each other may have vastly different property values based only on their place in Dulwich. Local Information for Charlton

Charlton is in the London Borough of Greenwich and is thought to get its name from the Saxon for husbandman or farmer. While you have your car, there are a few must-see places in Charlton. Charlton House was built for Sir Adam Newtown, who was the tutor for the young Prince Henry, son of James I and older brother to the future King Charles I. Sir Newton’s son, Henry, was friends with the diarist John Evelyn and Evelyn stated that the house had been built for Prince Henry. Building began on the house in 1607 and it is a fine example of Jacobean architecture. The grounds feature an orangery (now a public toilet) and large green areas begging to be picnicked in. Sir Adam was also responsible for building the nearby Saint Luke’s Church which is the final resting place for the only British Prime Minister to have been assassinated, Spencer Perceval. Edward Drummond is also buried here, after his murderer mistook him for Prime Minister Robert Peel and shot him as he left Peel’s house. Drummond died at Charlton after five days and Daniel M’Naghten, who was tried for his murder was found guilty due to insanity – giving rise to the M’Naughten rules the legal test of insanity used in many common law jurisdictions.

There are also many famous people to have been born in Charlton, so tour the area in your car and see if you can see any Blue Plaques!

Local Information for Kingston upon Thames

Kingston upon Thames is a busy riverside suburban town on the borders of London and Surrey. The town is situated in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames in Surrey. Originally an ancient market town, Kingston is located 10 miles to the south west of Charing Cross.
