Local Information for Ham
Located in the London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames is the town of Ham, taking its name from the Old English word ‘Hamme’ meaning ‘bend in the river’. Ham is connected over the River Thames to Teddington by the Teddington Lock – a pedestrian footbridge and the highest point where the tide reaches and has actually been three locks over time. The first lock began building in 1810 and was completed by 1812. The lock was constructed of timber and had repairs in 1825 and in 1856 stones were laid for the foundation with the project being finished in 1858.
Two footbridges were built between 1887 and 1889 – an iron girder bridge and a suspension bridge. In 1858, the second lock (called ‘the coffin’) was added, and in 1869 a boat slide was added. Lastly the barge lock also the largest lock on the river was completed in 1905. Take your your car to the lock and explore all there is to see – walk the bridges that have been there for over 100 years!
If bridges aren’t your thing, then take a look at historic Ham House, built in 1610 and at one stage owned by William Murray, the ‘whipping boy’ for the Prince who would become Charles I. Upon Murray’s death the house passed to his daughter, Elizabeth, who is believed to have belonged to the secret political organisation the ‘Sealed Knot’, who conspired to have the Monarchy returned to the throne during the period after the English Civil War (when the government and military ran England instead of the King). Drive your car to Ham House for a truly historic experience!
