Chaldon is in the Surrey Borough of Tandridge and in the village is the church of Saints Peter and Paul. The church was built in the 1000s and contains a painting on the wall. The wall painting dates back to 1170 and is titled “The Ladder of the Salvation of the Human Soul and the Road to Heaven” – it depicts scenes of salvation and damnation and it thought to be one of the most important paintings in England. The church is the only one in Chaldon and was originally Saxon – it was even mentioned in the Domesday Book.

Underneath Chaldon, there lies an ancient labyrinth of quarries that are over 10 miles in length. They ceased being used in the 1600s, and were sealed off in the 1700s, but uncovered again in 1968. Found in the mines and quarries are the skeletons of bats and animals used in the mines, as well as toilets used by the miners, while the walls hold tallies of stone taken from each mine, and graffiti by the miners.

It is thought that there was some form of quarrying in Chaldon about 1000 years ago, and the stone from these quarries is known as Chaldon firestone, due to its high silica content making it resistant to fire. The grey sludge on the floor in some parts of the mines has preserved the hoof prints of the animals used to pull the sleds, and the tracks of the sleds themselves.

Downe is a village located in the London borough of Bromley, and is home to Downe House, which was home to Charles Darwin. Downe House was originally built as a farm house in 1650 and was extended in about 1778. Darwin lived there from 1842, until his death in 1882. A grant from Wellcome Trust in 1996 allowed English Heritage to purchase the home and it reopened to the public in 1998.

A favourite place of Darwin’s was Downe Park, which is now a nature reserve. In 1907 a girls’ boarding school was established at the house, but it was moved away in 1922 – one of the school’s houses is called Darwin. Addiscombe is in the London Borough of Croydon and is largely a commuter suburb due to its many train and bus links to Central London, Croydon and Wimbledon.

The house Addiscombe Place was built in 1702 replacing an Elizabethan mansion that stood there at the corner of Outram Road and Mulberry Lane. In 1809 it was sold to the British East India Company which imported tea, coffee, silk, spices and cotton.

As the company kept their own private army, the house became a Military Seminary where officers received training before travelling to India. After the Indian Rebellion (otherwise known as the First War of Indian Independence, or the Indian Mutiny) the company ceased to be in 1857. There are five roads south of the house named after people who were prominent in the suppression of the mutiny – Outram, Havelock, Elgin, Clyde and Canning Roads. Oddly, these people were not actually part of the college run by the British East India Company.

In 1863 the house was demolished, and all that now remains are the buildings on the corner of Clyde and Addiscombe Roads, “Ashleigh” and “India”. The old gym on Havelock Road is now private apartments.

Local Information for Stockwell

Stockwell is an inner city town of London and the A3 major road runs through it. The city was just a manor from the 13th to the 19th century and included a botanical garden and markets. Local Information for Roehampton

Roehampton is a large village in south west London, 6.3 miles from Charing Cross. The village has a large number of learning institutions including Roehampton University and Queen Mary Hospital, a teaching centre for medical students.

The old village of Roehampton is a very affluent area with many large detached houses. Local Information for Leytonstone

Leytonstone has always been known as a gateway to London and has been trodden by millions dating back to the 10th Roman Legion of two thousand years ago. Today many people enter the city through Leytonstone to work in the city of London and the Docklands. Local Information for Westerham

Westerham is located at the foot of the North Downs which is a long chalk ridge that stretches from Surrey to Kent. A town and civil parish of the Sevenoaks district Westerham lays a short ten mile drive in your car rental west of Sevenoaks. It was mentioned as early as the 800s and its name is ‘western homestead’ in Old English. There is evidence to suggest that the area was inhabited as long ago as 2000BC with Celtic fortifications being uncovered.

The manor was first owned by Godwin, Earl of Kent and then his son Harold – who was the last Saxon King of England. Eustace II of Boulogne was the first Norman Lord of the manor, whose first wife was Goda, sister to Edward the Confessor. In 1227 Henry III granted the town a charter to hold a weekly market, and so it became very important in the cattle market and it was only as late as 1961 that the last cattle market was held in Westerham.

The Warde family have lived at historic Squerryes Court since 1731 and today their home is a tourist attraction. You may also want to visit the church of Saint Mary, thought to date back to the 1200s although it has been renovated in later times. Chartwell Manor, on the outskirts of Westerham, was once home to Winston Churchill and is now owned by the National Trust – another building to be visited in your car.

The River Darent runs through the town, and actually starts close to Westerham and in times gone by it used to power several mills.
