Brockley is located within the Borough of Lewisham in South East London. The area was largely agricultural until the 19th Century. The oldest cottages in Brockley date back to 1833 when the town began to develop as a residential area. The railway built on the site of the old Croydon canal provides a fast link for local residents into central London.

Hilly Fields in Brockley, as well as boasting a stone circle, provides marvelous views of Kent and Docklands. The park was a regular meeting place for the Suffragette movement between 1907 and 1914.

Brockley is very popular with artists. Goldsmith’s, part of the University of London, is situated here. Five previous winners of the Turner prize were educated here as were almost a quarter of all those shortlisted for the award since it began in 1984.

As well as several new cafes, bars and restaurants, the Brockley Jack, a late Victorian pub, has a fringe theatre upstairs. Brockley also has an Edwardian ballroom that hosts monthly jive nights.

Singers Kate Bush, Gabrielle and Bobby Valentino have all been residents of Brockley as was comedian Spike Milligan. Suffragette Emily Davidson also lived for a time in the town.

Another entrant in our search for unusual London suburb names is East Molesey. East Molesey is a suburb of Elmbridge district of Surrey and appears in the Domesday Book as ‘Molesham’, but it is believed that the town of ‘Muleseg’ dates back to 666 (and was part of a land granted to Chertsey Abbey).

In the 1200s, Molesey became East and West and before that it is believed that there was only one town which was East Molesey. Drive in your car to the quaint Bell Inn, surviving to this day from the 1500s. East Molesey and Hampton Court were joined by ferry since Henry VIII’s time, if not before, although the ferry was replaced with a wooden bridge in 1753. If you take your car over the bridge there now, it’s only the fourth bridge to stand on the site since Henry VIII crossed there!

The East Molesey Cricket Club is believed to be one of the oldest surviving cricket clubs in the world dating back to about 1730.

Located within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets is the area of Old Ford, once part of Bow. Bow is also within the borough of Tower Hamlets situated in East London. The name Old Ford comes from the ancient crossing of the River Lee, at the most downstream point – drive in your minibus hire down the modern Oxford Street and Old Street and you’d be travelling along the old route that pre-dates Roman times.

Roman occupation at Old Ford is evidenced by findings from the 300-400s. Legend has it that in 1110 the wife of Henry I, Matilda, fell at the ford, and ordered a bridge of three arches and a bow shape to be built over the Lee. This bridge and the church that was later built form the centre of the current area of Bow. Indeed, Saint Mary’s church now stands on a traffic island and parts of it date back to the early 1300s. The building of the bridge did not relegate Old Ford to a disused area but it continued to thrive (albeit as a rural area and largely isolated) and the population centre eventually moved to Bow in the Middle Ages.

Such was the difficult journey to the church in Stepney (Saint Dunstan’s) that the population of Bow were given special dispensation to worship in the chapel of ease.

Downe is a village located in the London borough of Bromley, and is home to Downe House, which was home to Charles Darwin. Downe House was originally built as a farm house in 1650 and was extended in about 1778. Darwin lived there from 1842, until his death in 1882. A grant from Wellcome Trust in 1996 allowed English Heritage to purchase the home and it reopened to the public in 1998.

A favourite place of Darwin’s was Downe Park, which is now a nature reserve. In 1907 a girls’ boarding school was established at the house, but it was moved away in 1922 – one of the school’s houses is called Darwin. Why not take advantage of your car while you have it, and pop down to Downe House and surrounds to explore the area for yourself? See where Darwin went for his walks, and where he wrote ‘Origin of the Species’.

Downe is also home to the Downe Scout Activity Centre, a nationally recognised centre that has been running for 70 years and is located on an 86 acre estate with beautiful woodlands and an excellent range of facilities. Travel in your car about 16 miles almost east of London and you’ll hit Dartford, the main town in the borough of Dartford in the shire of Kent. Dartford is located on the River Darent, where the old road from London to Dover (Watling Street, designed by the Romans) used to cross the river: Darent and ford gives you Dartford.

Dartford has a rich cultural and geological history – rich in chalk and flint deposits due to the area being under water up to 100 million years ago. These substances can be seen in the nearby Holy Trinity Church in Tulse Hill, with chalk and flint being used extensively after being mined from the deposits. As the water level dropped, the London clay beds were formed, and these are evidenced at nearby Swanscombe.

About 250 000 years ago the first people arrived in Dartford, and remnants of them can be found in the Swanscombe Man skull at Horniman Museum in south east London. The Stone, Bronze and Iron Age have all left relics at Dartford, and along with Watling Street a Roman villa has also been discovered.

Dartford has connections to many famous people including Mick Jagger and Keith Richards from Rolling Stones. Drive around in your car and see if you can’t spot any places made famous by famous people.

The area west of Dartford is known as Dartford heath, and there is found the Dartford warbler – take some time away and wander around, trying to witness the warbler!

Bermondsey in located in the Southwark Borough of London and was originally called “Beormund’s Ey”. This is a Saxon name and the Ey means island, indicating that the area was at one point a marshy riverside island. Addiscombe is in the London Borough of Croydon and is largely a commuter suburb due to its many train and bus links to Central London, Croydon and Wimbledon.

The house Addiscombe Place was built in 1702 replacing an Elizabethan mansion that stood there at the corner of Outram Road and Mulberry Lane. In 1809 it was sold to the British East India Company which imported tea, coffee, silk, spices and cotton.

As the company kept their own private army, the house became a Military Seminary where officers received training before travelling to India. After the Indian Rebellion (otherwise known as the First War of Indian Independence, or the Indian Mutiny) the company ceased to be in 1857. There are five roads south of the house named after people who were prominent in the suppression of the mutiny – Outram, Havelock, Elgin, Clyde and Canning Roads. Oddly, these people were not actually part of the college run by the British East India Company.

In 1863 the house was demolished, and all that now remains are the buildings on the corner of Clyde and Addiscombe Roads, “Ashleigh” and “India”. The old gym on Havelock Road is now private apartments.

Acton is a suburb of London and is located over two boroughs – East Acton is in Hammersmith and Fullham, while the rest and majority of Acton lies in Ealing. Hundreds of years ago there was a road from London and Oxford and along this road were several inns, where weary travellers would rest. Acton also lies on this road, the modern day Uxbridge Road, and some of the inns are still around. The main road between London and Oxford is now the A40 dual carriageway.

Drive down Uxbridge Road in your carand see if you can spot any old inns. Then tour Acton itself in your car and try to find some of the areas made famous by famous people. All members of The Who were born in Acton and all of them with the exception of Keith Moon went to Acton High School. Pete Townsend’s solo album ‘All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes’ contained a track called ‘Stardom in Acton’. The film clip was shot in and around Acton High Street.

For fans of Monty Python, the ‘Bicycle Repair Man’ sketch was filmed on Churchfield Road. The disused Acton Power Station was host to filming for the movies ‘Aliens’ and ‘Batman’. Local Information for Brooklands

Near Weybridge, in the Surrey Borough of Elmbridge, lies Brooklands. A disused racing circuit and airfield, it is now a museum for the same. Opened in 1907, Brooklands Aerodrome and Race Circuit were brought to life by Hugh Locke-King and was the first custom-built banked track in the world. And, by only about two months, it was the second oval track for cars.

Along the centre of the track was a dotted line – called the fifty foot line – and by driving over the line, a driver could theoretically take corners without steering. During WWII fuel rationing meant the races had to be stopped, and by the time the war was finished the new cars were deemed too fast for the banked track. A preservation order in 2001 meant the remaining sections of the track were protected.

Brooklands Aerodrome is also one of England’s first airfields. In 1908, it hosted the first flight of a British plane by a British pilot. In 1910 the first British flying school was opened, and in 1912 Sopwith School of Flying opened. Later that year the Sopwith Aviation Company opened. Now, the first Concorde ever built is housed here, and many of the planes kept here were built at Brooklands.

The Brooklands Museum now operates out of here and the Brooklands Society proudly announces that they ‘saved Brooklands’. Take your visitors to Brooklands in your car and show them this historic airfield and track

Local Information for West Ewell

West Ewell at the end of the 19th century was known as Upper and Lower Marsh. The area consisted mainly of farmland including Park Farm, Fitznell’s Farm, Poplar Farm and Scott’s Farm. There were a few dwellings, which were mostly the homes formerly occupied by workers at the nearby Gunpowder mills on the Hogsmill. Two explosions, and an inquest took a toll in the 1860’s, and the area was slowly rebuilt.

Today, the town is still referred to as a “village” by residents because of its rural feel and architecture. Despite it’s location on the southern edge of Greater London, West Ewell enjoys the quiet life blended in with the modern luxuries of the 21st century to make a truly unique area.
