Local Information for Ham

Map powered by MapPress

Ham is located in the London Borough of Richmond-Upon-Thames and its name derives from the Old English meaning ‘place at the bend in the river’, as it lies on a bend in the Thames between Richmond and Kingston. It is connected by a pedestrian bridge to Teddington at Teddington Lock and during the summer months a ferry runs to Marble House at Twickenham.

Ham is home to Ham House, a stately home owned by the National Trust (who claim that it is the only surviving complete building from the 1600s in Europe). Ham House was built in 1610 for the Knight Marshal for James I, and in 1626 passed down to the whipping boy (a person who took the punishment for someone, in this case, the future King Charles I) William Murray who remodelled the interior.

When civil war broke out in 1642, Murray fought for the Royalists and was made 1st Earl of Dysart for his loyalty – his daughter inherited Ham House and his titles when Murray died, becoming the Countess of Dysart. Her ghost (and that of her dog) is said to haunt the house.

The extensive gardens include a 17th century Orangery (a building which grew oranges, sheltered in glass over winter – similar to a glasshouse. They were fashionable among the affluent in the 17th – 19th centuries).

Local Information for Whyteleafe

Whyteleafe is located in the south east England district of Tandridge and is serviced by three rail stations (Upper Warlingham, Whyteleafe and Whyteleafe South) and trunk road the A22, which runs through town. Why not use your car to get into town and catch a train to one of the nearby towns?

The name Whyteleafe is probably taken from the underside of the leaves from the whitebeam tree. The whitebeam tree has apparently always grown in the area and now covers parts of the town. The unusual spelling of ‘Whyteleafe’ was adopted by a Mr Drew, who built a house on a parcel of land formerly known as Whiteleafe Field. Mr Drew took the gothic spelling – the new spelling was subsequently taken by the town, and it stuck! Neighbouring suburbs are Warlingham, Woldingham and Caterham, Kenley Airfield lies to the west. Take a drive around Whyteleafe in your car and see the different towns that border it.

As with many small towns, the population boomed in Whyteleafe when the rail came to town in 1856, and the new church, Saint Luke’s was consecrated shortly after (10 years) in 1866. The church is actually in the nearby Diocese of Southwark. Whyteleafe station opened in 1900, with the first station master being Frederick White.

There are many eating places in and around Whyteleafe, including the obligatory Chinese restaurant, as well as cafés, Indian restaurants, pubs and steakhouses. Why not treat yourself and your family to a night out parking the car and strolling to a restaurant for a great meal.
