Travel in your car about 16 miles almost east of London and you’ll hit Dartford, the main town in the borough of Dartford in the shire of Kent. Dartford is located on the River Darent, where the old road from London to Dover (Watling Street, designed by the Romans) used to cross the river: Darent and ford gives you Dartford.

Dartford has a rich cultural and geological history – rich in chalk and flint deposits due to the area being under water up to 100 million years ago. These substances can be seen in the nearby Holy Trinity Church in Tulse Hill, with chalk and flint being used extensively after being mined from the deposits. As the water level dropped, the London clay beds were formed, and these are evidenced at nearby Swanscombe.

About 250 000 years ago the first people arrived in Dartford, and remnants of them can be found in the Swanscombe Man skull at Horniman Museum in south east London. The Stone, Bronze and Iron Age have all left relics at Dartford, and along with Watling Street a Roman villa has also been discovered.

Dartford has connections to many famous people including Mick Jagger and Keith Richards from Rolling Stones. Drive around in your car and see if you can’t spot any places made famous by famous people.

Local Information for Hampton Court

Hampton Court is in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It is the site of the famous Hampton Court Palace.

Originally a 14th century manor house, it was leased by Thomas Wolsey the then Archbishop of York in 1514. He spent extravagantly over the next few years rebuilding the house to form the basis of the present palace. He was later forced to hand the property over to King Henry VIII in 1525.

Henry completely rebuilt sections of the Palace and it remains the only one of fifty palaces that he built. He added the Great Hall and the Royal Tennis Court which is still used today for the game of real tennis.

During the reign of William and Mary, half the palace was replaced and new wings were added to house the state apartments. The house continued being used until the reign of George III when it ceased to be a royal residence. Restoration of the Great Hall began in 1796 and by 1838 the palace was opened to the public.

Several ghosts are said to haunt the Palace including those of Henry VIII and three of his wives, Jane Seymour, Catherine Howard and Anne Boleyn.

In addition to the Palace, the grounds sport the famous Hampton Court Maze and every December there is an ice rink in the Palace forecourt.

Local Information for Shepperton

Shepperton is located in the Borough of Spelthorne, in the County of Surrey. The town lies on the north bank of the River Thames. It derives its name from ‘Shepherds Town’ and one of the town’s older roads is called Sheep Walk. Saxon cemeteries have been found in the area suggesting there were early settlements there. The original village was built around the church square. The church, St. Nicholas Church, was built in 1614. The village expanded to the north due to the construction of the railway station.

The town is most famous as the home of Shepperton film studios. The studios began producing films in the early 1930’s. They merged with Pinewood Studios in 2002 but the two companies have retained their individual identities. Many of the special effects for the “Da Vinci Code’ were created at Shepperton. Local Information for Moorgate

Moorgate was named after being a minor gate in the old London Wall. Although that wall was demolished in 1761, the street became a major avenue to the London Bridge and kept the moniker. It is also derived from the surrounding areas of Moorfields, which was one of the last pieces of open land in the city of London.

Woking is a large town with borough status in the County of Surrey. The history of Woking dates back to AD673 when it was a settlement of a Wessex tribe, followers of Wocca. The town has been known under various different names over the ages. Woking has excellent rail links and has now become a popular commuter town for people working in London.

In 1651, the Wey Navigation Canal was opened for traffic from Guildford to the River Thames. This encouraged residential development in the area. The railway arrived in 1838 securing the town’s future as a commuter town.

Woking has an excellent pedestrianised shopping centre that includes the Wolsey and Peacock shopping centers and an open-air market. Night life in the town is centered around the Chertsey Road area. Here you’ll find several restaurants and bars as well as the Ambassadors Cinemas and the New Victoria Theatre.

The McLaren Formula One racing team has its base near Woking as does Raikkonen Robertson Racing, the Formula Three team begun by Kimi Raikkonen.

Probably the most famous resident of Woking was the author H. G. Wells. In his book, ‘The War of the Worlds’ the Martians landed at Horsell common near Woking. There is a large sculpture of a Martian spaceship in the town that immortalizes this incident.

Local Information for Whetstone

Whetstone is located in the borough of Barnet, in the area adjoining Totteridge. Whetstone is a small residential area that has maintained a friendly, welcoming village atmosphere.

In medieval times, Whetstone was an important staging post for stagecoaches. Today, it is just minutes from any of London’s famous sights such as the London Eye or the Royal Air Force Museum.

The Adelphi Fine Art Museum and the Bertold Gallery are both located nearby and offers exhibits of local artist as well as great English artwork.

Local Information for Bromley

Bromley is the main suburb in the London borough of Bromley. Records dating back to 1272 state the name comes from the Old English for ‘broom hill’. If you read Jane Austen’s book, ‘Pride and Prejudice’, there is a reference to Bromley in chapter fourteen of volume two. Lady Catherine says to Mrs Collins “Where shall you change horses? Oh! Bromley, of course. If you mention my name at The Bell, you will be attended to.” In 2005 ‘The Bell’ pub was converted to a bar – ‘Sky’. Sky has since shut down, replaced by another bar called ‘Bromleys’, but the sign of the ‘Royal Bell’ can still be seen on the stones out front.

H.G. Wells was born in Bromley, and Billy Idol’s mother still lives in Bromley. Actor Michael York (of ‘Austen Powers’ fame) lived in Bromley, as did David Bowie and Peter Frampton. Bromley has a mall, High Street, and is one of the ten major metropolitan centres outlined in the London Plan, in the South London sub-region.

Why not spend the day at ‘The Glades’ shopping centre, and use your van hire to get all your shopping home? Drive past historic Wickham Court, built in the 1480s by Sir Henry Heydon while Edward IV was King. If you’re lucky you might chance upon a day when they’re having an open day, and you might be able to book a tour of this beautiful old building.
