The name of this unique town in the Borough of Surrey dates back to medieval times and is derived from the words “Great North Woods” which once covered the region. In the 1600’s the plague took its toll on the West Norwood area, and many families became refugees from it.

Near 1800, the area now known as West Norwood became more enclosed and featured a focused common area. The area started to be resurrected when the Beulah Spa opened in 1831, and visitors from around Europe came to experience it. The Crystal Palace also became a popular destination, and many people moved into the area to work in one of the booming businesses that were popping up. When the Crystal Palace burnt to the ground in 1936, a recession started, but was quickly halted by the railway and water industries that moved in.

Today West Norwood boasts a beautiful 100-year-old park, appropriately named Norwood Park and a wide variety of homes, businesses, and entertainment establishments. West Molesey is a village in the Borough of Elmbridge in Surrey. It is situated on the banks of the River Thames. Until the 1930’s it was primarily an agricultural community with four large farms and several market gardens still in full production that year. The centre of the village includes St. Peter’s church, a small number of shops and a few pubs and restaurants.

One of the earliest balloon ascents in the history of English aeronautics took place from the grounds of the “Priory”, now Molesey Football Ground, in 1785.

Nearby Molesey Hurst was one of England’s oldest sporting venues providing spectators with prizefighting and horse racing events. Prizefighting was banned here in 1824 but horse racing continued until 1962. Cricket was played here as early as 1723 and you can see a painting of a match at Molesey Hurst in the 1790s hanging in the Long Room at Lords. It was also the location of one of the first games of golf in England. The Molesey Hurst is now known as Hurst Park and is the site of a housing estate.

Walton-on-Thames is a town in the Elmbridge Borough of the County of Surrey. It is situated 15.3 miles south west of Charing Cross with the River Thames to its north. The original village lies along the banks of the river.

A mile upstream was the Royal Palace of Oatlands that Henry VIII built in 1538. The Oatlands Park Hotel now occupies the site of the old palace.

Hersham and Walton Motors, the racing car constructor in the 1950’s, were based in the town. Stirling Moss won his first F1 Grand Prix in an HWM. The company is now an Audi and Aston Martin dealership.

The town centre has recently undergone re-development with the construction of a shopping mall and small apartments. The main part of the centre now has several well known brand retailers.

Chessington is a town in the Greater London Borough of Kingston upon Thames. During the 18th century Chessington was a tiny village that stood on a large and nearly desolate common. Now it is part of the urban sprawl of Greater London.

Chessington Hall was a country house in the village and between 1754 and 1783 was the home to the failed playwright Samuel Crisp. He is buried in the churchyard in Chessington and commemorated by a memorial in the church. The original hall, dating back to 1520 was demolished in 1832 and replaced by a newer building. This in turn was demolished in 1965 and a housing estate built on the estate grounds.

Today the best know attraction in the town is Chessington World of Adventures. This is a family theme park and zoo which is open to the public from March to October each year. The park is split into ten individually themed areas. Also within the park you can see an English civil war mansion, Burnt Stub.

The former formula one team Brabham used to have their factory in Chessington. This has now been taken over by the Carlin DPR GP2 team.

Local Information for Chislehurst

Chislehurst is a village in the London Borough of Bromley. The name is derived from the Saxon ‘cisel’ meaning gravel and ‘hyrst’ meaning wooded hill.

Biggin Hill is a place in the London Borough of Bromley and is most famous for its aerodrome. London Biggin Hill airport is now classed as one of London’s international airports even though it has no scheduled passenger services!

The airport opened in 1917 as a communications base for the Royal Flying Corps. It was an RAF station during World War II and one of the commanding bases for the Battle of Britain with Spitfires and Hurricanes based there. After the war, Biggin Hill became the Officer and Aircrew Selection Centre for the RAF. The RAF station closed in 1992 although the old RAF buildings still remain around the airfield. The original RAF housing has been demolished to make way for new residential developments.

The town is served by Fulwell railway station which is on the Shepperton to London Waterloo line. Hampton Hill High Street stages a yearly parade before Christmas. The street is closed to traffic and a procession takes place.

Local Information for Hampton Court

Hampton Court is in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It is the site of the famous Hampton Court Palace.

Originally a 14th century manor house, it was leased by Thomas Wolsey the then Archbishop of York in 1514. He spent extravagantly over the next few years rebuilding the house to form the basis of the present palace. He was later forced to hand the property over to King Henry VIII in 1525.

Henry completely rebuilt sections of the Palace and it remains the only one of fifty palaces that he built. He added the Great Hall and the Royal Tennis Court which is still used today for the game of real tennis.

During the reign of William and Mary, half the palace was replaced and new wings were added to house the state apartments. The house continued being used until the reign of George III when it ceased to be a royal residence. Restoration of the Great Hall began in 1796 and by 1838 the palace was opened to the public.

Several ghosts are said to haunt the Palace including those of Henry VIII and three of his wives, Jane Seymour, Catherine Howard and Anne Boleyn.

The historic town of Merton contributed its name to the London Borough of the same name. The town is centred around the twelfth century parish church of St. Mary’s in Merton Park.

Chipstead is a village on the North Downs in the County of Surrey. The name is believed to have evolved from the old English word ‘ceapstede’ meaning market place.

The first settlement was in the 7th century and the small population was made up of herdsmen who were attracted to the area by the large number of ponds. Chipstead Downs is a site of special scientific interest due to the wide range of flora and fauna.

The church of St. Margaret still retains some 12th century features although much work has been done to improve the building through the centuries.

The village remained a rural parish until the arrival of the railway in the late 19th century. The residents of Chipstead still resist the installation of street lighting in the village despite having some of the most expensive houses in the area.

Today the area is largely residential although there are several small areas of economic activity. The village does have a railway station which links it to London’s Charing Cross and Victoria stations but there are no bus services through the village.

Local Information for Shepperton

Shepperton is located in the Borough of Spelthorne, in the County of Surrey. The town lies on the north bank of the River Thames. It derives its name from ‘Shepherds Town’ and one of the town’s older roads is called Sheep Walk. Saxon cemeteries have been found in the area suggesting there were early settlements there. The original village was built around the church square. The church, St. Nicholas Church, was built in 1614. The village expanded to the north due to the construction of the railway station.

The town is most famous as the home of Shepperton film studios. The studios began producing films in the early 1930’s. They merged with Pinewood Studios in 2002 but the two companies have retained their individual identities. Many of the special effects for the “Da Vinci Code’ were created at Shepperton. The town is also home to the Thamesmead Music School.

The Anchor Hotel, overlooking Church Square, was a popular haunt with the notorious highwayman, Dick Turpin. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor were also visitors when they were filming at Shepperton Studios

Local Information for Thamesmead

Drive your car to the southern bank of the Thames in London and spread across the boroughs of Bexley and Greenwich you’ll find the town of Thamesmead. Built as a ‘new town’, it housed many of the families being moved out of Central London due to the clearing of slum areas, and was done so over land that was previously occupied by the Royal Arsenal over Erith and Plumstead Marshes.

In 1953, the North Sea Floods swamped the area so many of the planned houses were to be built at least two storeys high with garages only to be on ground level. There is still a stigma attached to the area due to its beginnings in life as a council overflow area and it is also directly in the flight path of planes coming into London City Airport.

But housing is still being constructed and prices are not too expensive (due in part to the continuing stigma, but also because of the poor transport links to the area), considering its proximity to the city centre.

Much of the original housing was built by the Greater London Council, which was abolished in 1986, and everything was handed over to the non-profit Thamesmead Town Limited, which was done away with in 2000. Gallions Housing Association assumed ownership and management of the housing assets and Tilfen Land took control of the undeveloped land.

Local Information for Petts Wood

Petts Wood is a village in the London Borough of Bromley. The name first appeared in the year 1577 in the form of a family of ship builders, the Pett family. The daylight inn in Petts Wood was named in honor of William Willett who was a campaigner for Daylight Savings Time and lived in the nearby town of Chislehurst for a large part of his life.

The village of Petts Wood also has a pub named The Sovereign of the Seas. The city is connected by a railway station which is located between the towns of Bickley and Orpington. Petts Wood has a splendid park known as the Jubilee Country Park which serves as a recreational ground for both residents and visitors alike. The park is situated towards the northwest of the shopping area and is also home to various rare and endangered species.

Most of the town was built in the early 20th century as a high quality estate in a rural setting. The area sustained heavy bombing during WW2 because of its proximity to an important railway junction.

Charles de Gaulle, the former President of France, lived in Petts Wood, for part of the Second World War.
