Local Information for Belgravia

Belgravia is located in the central London Borough of Westminster, just to the south west of Buckingham Palace. This farmland became residential after its purchase in 1820 by Lord Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster – the contractor and builder was Thomas Cubitt. The name Belgravia comes from a village on Grosvenor’s Leicestershire estate.

There are many gardens in Belgravia, so why not use your car to drive your family for picnics in one this weekend. Wander past Eaton and Belgravia Squares (but you can’t enter the latter, being key-holder access only, 4.5 acres surrounded by embassies and diplomatic residences), and admire the beautiful white stucco houses – large houses with large gardens in Belgravia are some of the most expensive in the world, with some valued at over £15 million.

It was in the early 1800s, and still is, the most sought-after residential areas in London; many rich and famous people currently live in Belgravia. Famous people such as Margaret Thatcher, Joan Collins, Sarah Brightman, Nigella Lawson and Elle McPherson.

Go celebrity spotting in your car, and see who you can spy. Or, try finding places inhabited by some previous residents: Prime Ministers Stanley Baldwin and Arthur Chamberlain, composers Frederic Chopin and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, actors Dame Edith Evans and Vivien Leigh, authors Ian Lancaster Fleming and Mary Shelley and poet Lord Tennyson.

Local Information for Muswell Hill

Map powered by MapPress

The suburb of Muswell Hill is north of London and sits primarily in the Borough of Haringey. History is recorded here dating back to the 12th century when the Bishop of London owned the land and gave several acres to a group of nuns who built a chapel and named it ‘Our Lady of Muswell’. Country houses started springing up until the 19th century when development accelerated by the opening of a railway. From 1920 on, building continued and includes an art deco Odeon cinema, music hall, several churches from many denominations, and the retail belt, which is still a popular shopping hotspot today.

There is somewhat of a village atmosphere close to Alexandra Park and Highgate Woods, and is home to many trendy bars, boutiques, coffee shops and delicatessens. The Edwardian splendor of Fortis Green Road and Muswell Hill is still very much intact and serves as a high end shopping districts mingled with large, ornate churches. Many famous people have lived in Muswell Hill including artist Vivian Stanshall, TV journalist Joel Defries, and actor Mackenzie Crook to name a few. Parking is easy to find and plentiful in the area, and the short walk you might take from your spot are well worth the effort.

Local Information for Pimlico

Map powered by MapPress

Located in the London Borough of Westminster is the town of Pimlico. Mainly residential, and famous for its range of hotels Pimlico contains many buildings designed by architect Thomas Cubitt. Speculation surrounds the naming of Pimlico with theories suggesting it is named after the Spanish word for drink or a man who made ale and whose surname was Pimlico. Take a drive around Pimlico in your car and admire the beautiful little hotels dotted here and there.

A famous former resident of Pimlico was artist Richard Dadd. Dadd was believed to be the leading talent in the gang of artists known as ‘The Clique’. Other members included William Powell Frith, Augustus Egg and Henry O’Neill. Dadd was widely believed to have suffered from either schizophrenia or bipolar, and after killing his father in a delusional episode, was sent to a psychiatric hospital. He was allowed to paint and some of his best work was completed while he was here – his work included agonising detail, featuring fairies and creatures of magic and lore.

Another well-known person who lived in Pimlico was Aubrey Vincent Beardsley. He was an artist in the Art Nouveau era and became famous for his drawings of erotica and images dark and perverse. Beardsley’s private life was the source of much speculation with people believing he had an incestuous relationship with his sister who became pregnant and miscarried. Others said that even though he identified with the homosexual set of Oscar Wilde and cohorts Beardsley was ‘secretly’ heterosexual. He died at age 25 of tuberculosis. Take a drive around in your car, and discover the hidden history of Pimlico!

Chessington is a town in the Greater London Borough of Kingston upon Thames. During the 18th century Chessington was a tiny village that stood on a large and nearly desolate common. Now it is part of the urban sprawl of Greater London.

Chessington Hall was a country house in the village and between 1754 and 1783 was the home to the failed playwright Samuel Crisp. He is buried in the churchyard in Chessington and commemorated by a memorial in the church. The original hall, dating back to 1520 was demolished in 1832 and replaced by a newer building. This in turn was demolished in 1965 and a housing estate built on the estate grounds.

Today the best know attraction in the town is Chessington World of Adventures. This is a family theme park and zoo which is open to the public from March to October each year. The park is split into ten individually themed areas. Also within the park you can see an English civil war mansion, Burnt Stub.

The former formula one team Brabham used to have their factory in Chessington. This has now been taken over by the Carlin DPR GP2 team.

Local Information for Biggin Hill

Map powered by MapPress

Biggin Hill is a place in the London Borough of Bromley and is most famous for its aerodrome. London Biggin Hill airport is now classed as one of London’s international airports even though it has no scheduled passenger services!

The airport opened in 1917 as a communications base for the Royal Flying Corps. It was an RAF station during World War II and one of the commanding bases for the Battle of Britain with Spitfires and Hurricanes based there. After the war, Biggin Hill became the Officer and Aircrew Selection Centre for the RAF. The RAF station closed in 1992 although the old RAF buildings still remain around the airfield. The original RAF housing has been demolished to make way for new residential developments.

Anyone who lives in Biggin Hill or any where in the UK should take advantage of the Comet Clearance Sale and save money today.

Today, many flying schools and private aircraft are based at the airport due to its close proximity to London. Biggin Hill is also the location of an annual air display, usually held on the first weekend in June.
The airport was used as the landing place for Sir Leigh Teabing’s private plane in Dan Brown’s novel, The Da Vinci Code.
Biggin Hill is believed to be the home of many ghosts! This is generally attributed to the fact that it is the home of a World War II airbase.

Local Information for Morden

Morden is a town in the London Borough of Merton approximately 10 miles south west of Central London.

There is evidence of human activity around Morden in pre-historic times when Celtic tribes are known to have had settlements in the Wimbledon area. The first significant development in Morden’s history came with the construction of the Stane Street Roman Road.

Ethelstan, son of Ethelred the Unready left land to the abbey of Christ and St. Peter in his will. This land later became the site of the first Saxon parish church of St Lawrence.

Morden remained a rural settlement throughout the 19th century and the population was clustered around St. Lawrence’s church. Near the church was The George Inn, now modernized, originally a 17th century coaching inn. The other public house in the village at that time was the Crown Inn situated to the north east of the village.

The main industry was agriculture although there was a little industrial activity along the River Wandle where watermills were used to grind tobacco into snuff. The situation remained the same until the opening of Morden Underground Station in 1926. This signaled the opening up of the village for residential development. The town is now a suburban area although there are some excellent parks and playing fields.
