Ham is located in the London Borough of Richmond-Upon-Thames and its name derives from the Old English meaning ‘place at the bend in the river’, as it lies on a bend in the Thames between Richmond and Kingston. It is connected by a pedestrian bridge to Teddington at Teddington Lock and during the summer months a ferry runs to Marble House at Twickenham.

Ham is home to Ham House, a stately home owned by the National Trust (who claim that it is the only surviving complete building from the 1600s in Europe). Ham House was built in 1610 for the Knight Marshal for James I, and in 1626 passed down to the whipping boy (a person who took the punishment for someone, in this case, the future King Charles I) William Murray who remodelled the interior.

When civil war broke out in 1642, Murray fought for the Royalists and was made 1st Earl of Dysart for his loyalty – his daughter inherited Ham House and his titles when Murray died, becoming the Countess of Dysart. Her ghost (and that of her dog) is said to haunt the house.

The extensive gardens include a 17th century Orangery (a building which grew oranges, sheltered in glass over winter – similar to a glasshouse. They were fashionable among the affluent in the 17th – 19th centuries).

The Hyde is a small area in the Barnet London Borough. This area was first recorded in the year 1281 and the name means the hide of land which is big enough for a family to live on (about 120 acres). With your car you can visit this little place which forms part of Hendon to see the attractions there.

Marylebone is located in the London Borough of Westminster and its name is derived from a church, Saint Mary’s, which was built by a small river (or ‘bourne’) called Tybourne. The town the church was built in was named after the river, Tyburn. The church and the area around it became known as ‘Saint Mary at the Bourne’. Over time the town’s name was contracted to Marylebone. Use your car to travel to the All Souls Church designed by John Nash.

Nash was an architect and primarily designed in the ‘Regency’ Period – the era defined as being when George III was ruled unfit for the crown and his son (who became George IV) was Prince Regent. A Prince Regent was a Prince who was not officially the King but ruled as such due to the Monarch being unable to rule for some reason – in the case of George III, mental instability.

Other reasons might have been the King being out of the country due to war or exile. But The Prince of Wales remained Prince Regent until his father’s death in 1820 when he succeeded to the throne and became King George IV. Nash’s work was noticed by the young Prince Regent and commissioned him to work on the Marylebone Park area. The resulting Regent Street and Regent’s Park were named after the Prince

East Molesey is a village situated on the banks of the River Thames in Surrey. The name Molesey comes from the old English word Mul which island or river meadow. It was an important place for loading, unloading and distributing manufactured goods and produce due to its riverside location.

The most momentous day in the village’s history was 2nd February, 1849, when the railway line to London was opened. This heralded the start of residential development and many houses and villas were built.

The Bell Pub is a 16th century pub situated in Bell Road that was the haunt of many notorious highwaymen. The building is known affectionately by locals as “the old crooked house” because it leans at alarming angles! Bell Road also contains many old cottages built in the times of Hampton Court Palace. Located in the west London Borough of Ealing is the town of West Ealing. West Ealing as it exists today is less than 100 years old. In 1234 there was a hamlet called West Ealing, but the name changed to Ealing Dean and references to this name go back to 1456. On a parish map of Ealing, Ealing Dean appears in 1777. In 1871 West Ealing station began its life as Castle Hill and Ealing Dean Station.

An important road ran through the area, which later became Uxbridge Road, and during the 1800s it was a stopping place for stage coaches. Indeed, the London to Banbury and Oxford coach stopped along here at the Halfway House, now called the Broadwalk Hotel (although the old name can still be seen at the top of the building). The pub is now an Iceland but was once called the Green Man, and reportedly had stables for 100 horses. Why not drive along Uxbridge Road in your car and stop for a pint at the old refreshment centers?

Also in the 1800s was the development of market gardens, the remnants of this can be seen in the old ‘Steel’s Fruit Packing Warehouse’, which has barely changed over time.

Local Information for North Cheam

North Cheam, a part of the large suburban village of Cheam, is situated close to Sutton in the London Borough of the same name. It is more of a shopping area than a residential one.

Cheam’s history can be traced back to the early 11th century when it was owned by Chertsey Abbey. In the Middle Ages, the area was know for its potteries and in 1538 a part of Cheam was handed over to Henry VIII.

Lumley Chapel, next to St Dunstan’s church in the town centre, is the oldest standing building in the Sutton Borough. Also, in the centre of Cheam village, you can visit Whitehall. West Kensington is located in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, although some of the town falls into the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and is home to the Queen’s Club Sporting Complex. The Queen’s Club is a private sporting club founded in 1886, and was the world’s first multipurpose sporting complex, named after its first patron, Queen Victoria. It has 28 outdoor courts and 8 indoor and of the outdoor about half are said to be some of the best grass courts in the world.

Famous residents include Mahatma Ghandi, composer Edward Elgar and writer Sir Henry Rider Haggard. Haggard wrote adventure novels set in exotic locations. Local Information for Hampton Wick

Hampton Wick is an area in the London Borough of Richmond. It now lies in the London commuter belt although development is constrained by the surrounding areas of Bushey Park, Hampton Court Park and the River Thames. Until the beginning of the 20th century the town was famous for its market gardens.

Historically Hampton Wick can be traced back to Roman times with evidence of a Roman ford crossing the Thames linking the village with Kingston upon Thames. The first bridge replacing this ford was built in 1219.

Cardinal Wolsey, the Lord Chancellor to Henry VIII lived in Hampton Wick while waiting for Hampton Court Palace to be built. His house still exists in Lower Teddington Road. The building of the palace produced employment and shops and inns were built to serve it.

Sir Richard Steele, the Irish writer and politician also lived in the village during the time he became surveyor of the royal stables at Hampton Court Palace and a knight.

Sunbury-on-Thames lies to the west of London in the Spelthorne Borough of Surrey. Sunbury has excellent transportation links and many of its residents now commute into Central London.

Once an ancient riverside settlement its history can be dated back to the Bronze Age with the discovery of funerary urns dating from the 10th century BC.

The town has been mentioned in literary works, most notably St. Mary’s church and the nearby Ferry House, in Charles Dickens’ book Oliver Twist. Jerome K Jerome also mentioned the difficulty of rowing up the river in his book ‘Three men in a boat’

Local Information for Maida Vale

Drive in your car to the London Borough of Westminster and you’ll find the town of Maida Vale. The area is primarily housing and affluent although it is named after a pub and the pub was named after a battle. Maida Vale is also home to the area known as Little Venice, a junction of three canals populated by houseboats and named by poet Robert Browning. Park your car and take a boat to Regents Park – one of the Royal Parks of London (the other Royal Parks are Bushy, Green, Greenwich, Hyde, Richmond and Saint James’s, and Kensington Gardens).

Also located in Westminster but partly in Camden, and officially known as ‘The Regents Park’, it is made up of 487 acres divided into an outer ring road (‘Outer Circle’) and the inner ring road (obviously called the ‘Inner Circle’). The Inner Circle contains Queen Mary’s Gardens, and at the northern end of the park is the Regent’s Canal, which joins the Grand Union Canal to the old London Docks.

At the junction of these two canals (at Maida Vale) lies Browning’s Pool, overlooked by Maida Avenue, Warwick Crescent and Blomfield Crescent. The meeting of the three canals (the third is the Paddington Arm of the Grand Union Canal) is known as the Paddington Basin.

Maida Vale is also home to the BBC Radio One, Two and Three studios. They studios are nicknamed ‘Maida Vegas’ by the radio DJ Zane Lowe.
