Local Information for Blackheath

Map powered by MapPress

The most notable landmark of the south east London village of Blackheath is its heath, located in the centre of the area. Straddling the boroughs of Lewisham and Greenwich, its historical village can be found to the south of the heath. The more modern area of this leafy suburb, known as Blackheath Standard, can be found to the north.

Its position along the ancient Roman road, Watling Street, allowed a Roman settlement to develop here. However, this prime location suffered greatly as a result of it. Its rich history includes battles waged during the reign of Etherlred the Unready and the Battle of Blackheath. During the 17th century, the area was the haunt of highwaymen who targeted stagecoaches making their way from London to Channel ports and north Kent.

Blackheath is well-positioned for your group’s travel plans, wherever your destination may be. The A21 is just a short drive in your minibus rental and provides access to Hastings, Bromley and Orpington. The A20 offers connections with Kent towns, central London and the M25. Those crossing the Channel in their minibus can reach Dover in less than 90 minutes.

Local Information for The Stoneleigh

Map powered by MapPress

Stoneleigh is a small area in Surrey situated in the Epsom and Ewell district. The village was developed around the Stoneleigh Railway Station and the Broadway. This area was only developed in the 1930’s and until then was basically farm land and open fields. There is a red brick Anglican Church that was built here at that time. With your car you can explore this lovely place and view the parks that were part of Nonsuch Palace.

This palace was one of the Tudor palaces that Henry the Eighth lived in and was destroyed in the 17th century. Many pieces were sold to be used in other buildings, but the only remains of the banqueting hall are at the British Museum which you can visit with your car. The royal hunting grounds were sold off into farmlands, but some of them remain today as Nonsuch Park. In this park you will find The Mansion House to the west built in the 1800’s.

The Bowling Green Farmhouse and Coldharbour farmhouse were the original farms in this area and the owner John Stone built a house for himself that he called Stoneleigh. This is how the area got its name. Currently there are only 4500 people living in this village which makes it so quaint and friendly to visit with your car.

Local Information for West Wickham

Map powered by MapPress

West Wickham is a town in the London Borough of Bromley, 10 miles south east of Central London.

Early settlements in the area date back to 1068 when the hamlet had a population of just 110. By 1377 the estimated population had decreased to 101 due to the Black Death Plague. The manor house and the parish church were rebuilt in 1469 by Henry Heydon, a lawyer from Norfolk.

By 1801 the population had increased to 436 as the village became popular with the nobility and landed gentry. In the 1920’s and 1930’s several large houses came up for sale. Some of these were demolished and in their place neat rows of houses were erected. By 1939 there were approximately 20,000 residents in the town.

After the Second World War, West Wickham became a major shopping centre and commercial offices started to appear. You can now find a large selection of shops, pubs and restaurants in both the High Street and Station Road.

West Wickham is served by a train service running from Hayes to Charing Cross and there are currently around 50 miles of cycle paths around West Wickham, linking the town to nearby Bromley

Local Information for Nork

Another entrant in our quest for London’s Most Unusual Suburb Name is Nork. Located in the Borough of Reigate and Banstead Nork was the former home of David Walliams of ‘Little Britain’ fame.

Walliams was born in 1971 as David Williams (and had to change his name for Actor’s Equity as there was already a David Williams listed). Raised in Banstead and educated in Reigate Grammar School Walliams met his comedic partner Matt Lucas at the University of Bristol and on July 4th 2006 he (Walliams not Lucas) trained for nine months and successfully swam the English Channel to raise money for Sport Relief – an offshoot of Comic Relief where famous people raise money to fight poverty in England and Africa.

His effort took 10 hours and 34 minutes and raised over £1,000,000 in donations. Even more outstanding is the fact that he trained for the swim while doing his ‘Little Britain Live’ show travelling the United Kingdom.

Nork is also home to Nork Park which is home to Nork House and was home to the managing director of Coleman’s Mustards, F.E. Coleman. Coleman bought the house in 1890 and lived there with his family until 1923. Only remains remain, but pop in while you have your car and picnic in the grounds for a relaxing day out.

Local information for Motspur Park

Motspur Park, also known as West Barnes is a suburb of South West London. Until the end of the 19th century it was a rural area. That situation didn’t begin to change until the railway station was built. Although the railway was constructed through the town in 1859, Motspur Park station was not added until the early part of the 20th century.

England’s first dual carriageway, the Kingston Bypass, was built in 1926 just north of the town. The building of this road prompted further residential development in the town. The area finally began suburban development between the two world wars, with rows of terraced houses being constructed.

There is only one public house in Motspur Park, The Earl Beatty, named after David Beatty who commanded a significant part of the British naval fleet at the Battle of Jutland.

For a long time the major employer in the area was the Decca gramophone record company. The company diversified during the Second World War to make radar systems.

Motspur Park has several playing fields. Probably the most famous is Fulham football club’s training ground. Originally an athletics ground, owned by the University of London, it was used in the film ‘Chariots of Fire’.
