Our third entrant in ‘London’s Most Unusual Suburb Name’ search is Egham. Egham is a small town located in the Runnymede borough of Surrey, and predates 666AD when Chertsey Abbey was founded. It was recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086.

The Egham market is held monthly in High Street, so take your car and fill it full of local fruit and vegetables and produce! The Egham Regatta has been run on and off since 1909, with a break for WWI and then again between 1927 and 1955. It is now the only regatta in England that provides racing for punting, skiffs and rowing.

Egham has several clubs including a brass band that’s over 100 years old (the history, not the band members) a fencing club and a choral society.

The Egham Royal Show has been around for 149 years – however due to the foot and mouth outbreak, livestock won’t be shown. Epsom, to the south of Greater London, is located in the borough of Epsom and Ewell in Surrey. It is famously known for being the home of the Epsom Derby, a horse race on the Epsom Downs. Held every June, the derby is the second leg of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing in England. After the first running of the Epsom Oaks in 1779, the 12th Earl of Derby and Sir Charles Bunbury flipped a coin to see who would have a race named after them the next year. The Earl won, as did his horse that day (Bridget). The following year, at the first Epsom Derby, Sir Charles’ horse Diomed won, and so it all began!

At one stage, Epsom had five psychiatric hospitals located quite close to each other: Manor Hospital (built 1899), Saint Ebba’s Hosptial (1902), Horton Hospital (1903), Long Grove Hospital (1907, and exactly the same as Horton to save time), and West Park Hospital (started in 1912, completed in 1921). They were built on land at Epsom Downs, by the London County Council to ease the overcrowding of its other hospitals, and were called the ‘Epsom Cluster’. Horton, Manor and Long Grove Hospitals are now residential and West Park and Saint Ebba’s Hospitals having only limited services.

Another entrant in our search for unusual London suburb names is East Molesey. East Molesey is a suburb of Elmbridge district of Surrey and appears in the Domesday Book as ‘Molesham’, but it is believed that the town of ‘Muleseg’ dates back to 666 (and was part of a land granted to Chertsey Abbey).

In the 1200s, Molesey became East and West and before that it is believed that there was only one town which was East Molesey. Drive in your car to the quaint Bell Inn, surviving to this day from the 1500s. East Molesey and Hampton Court were joined by ferry since Henry VIII’s time, if not before, although the ferry was replaced with a wooden bridge in 1753. If you take your car over the bridge there now, it’s only the fourth bridge to stand on the site since Henry VIII crossed there!

The East Molesey Cricket Club is believed to be one of the oldest surviving cricket clubs in the world dating back to about 1730.

The Surrey town of Godstone, located just 6 miles from Reigate, is steeped in history and natural beauty. While the town has a Saxon past, the Plague destroyed the village built around St. Nicholas Church. In its place was a town featuring two centres, connected by Bullbeggars Lane. The two centres, ChurchTown and Godstone Green, are conservation areas.

Godstone Green, developed in the 16th century was a haven for coaches and horses and features many inns including the White Hart Pub. The Green’s pond was a watering hole for horses stopping off in the town.

Godstone is well placed for travel in the region as well as nationally. Junction 6 of the M25 is a short access to national routes via the nearby M25. The nearby A22 trunk road offers a quick route to Eastbourne, Purley and East Grinstead, while the A25 calls at Reigate, Dorking and Guildford.

Local Information for Thamesmead

Drive your car to the southern bank of the Thames in London and spread across the boroughs of Bexley and Greenwich you’ll find the town of Thamesmead. Built as a ‘new town’, it housed many of the families being moved out of Central London due to the clearing of slum areas, and was done so over land that was previously occupied by the Royal Arsenal over Erith and Plumstead Marshes.

In 1953, the North Sea Floods swamped the area so many of the planned houses were to be built at least two storeys high with garages only to be on ground level. There is still a stigma attached to the area due to its beginnings in life as a council overflow area and it is also directly in the flight path of planes coming into London City Airport.

But housing is still being constructed and prices are not too expensive (due in part to the continuing stigma, but also because of the poor transport links to the area), considering its proximity to the city centre.

Much of the original housing was built by the Greater London Council, which was abolished in 1986, and everything was handed over to the non-profit Thamesmead Town Limited, which was done away with in 2000. Gallions Housing Association assumed ownership and management of the housing assets and Tilfen Land took control of the undeveloped land.

Worcester Park is a suburb of London and is located in the London Borough of Sutton. The town takes its name from the 4th Earl of Worcester who was appointed Keeper of the Great Park in 1606. The park was created by Henry VIII around Nonsuch Palace and was a popular hunting ground.

The Earl built one of his residences named Worcester Park House in the town in 1607. The house burned down in 1948. The remaining walls and chimneys were later demolished by locals. By the late 1950’s, the ruins of an ornamental lake with a multi-arched bridge and balustrade were still visible in the woodland. There was no sign of the house, nor any ruins except for some piles of bricks. Close to the bridge was a ruined domed structure which was all that remained of the old ice house.

The town is well served with transport links to the capital. The railway links Worcester Park with London Waterloo and Epsom and Guildford. Regular buses go to Kingston and Sutton and there’s also hourly services to Heathrow and Croydon.

Worcester Park has a few notable residents. Former Prime Minister John Major, the author H. G. Wells and decathlete Daley Thompson all lived in the town at one point.

Whetstone is located in the borough of Barnet, in the area adjoining Totteridge. Whetstone is a small residential area that has maintained a friendly, welcoming village atmosphere.

Local Information for Westerham

Westerham is located at the foot of the North Downs which is a long chalk ridge that stretches from Surrey to Kent. A town and civil parish of the Sevenoaks district Westerham lays a short ten mile drive in your car rental west of Sevenoaks. It was mentioned as early as the 800s and its name is ‘western homestead’ in Old English. There is evidence to suggest that the area was inhabited as long ago as 2000BC with Celtic fortifications being uncovered.

The manor was first owned by Godwin, Earl of Kent and then his son Harold – who was the last Saxon King of England. Eustace II of Boulogne was the first Norman Lord of the manor, whose first wife was Goda, sister to Edward the Confessor. In 1227 Henry III granted the town a charter to hold a weekly market, and so it became very important in the cattle market and it was only as late as 1961 that the last cattle market was held in Westerham.

The Warde family have lived at historic Squerryes Court since 1731 and today their home is a tourist attraction. You may also want to visit the church of Saint Mary, thought to date back to the 1200s although it has been renovated in later times. Chartwell Manor, on the outskirts of Westerham, was once home to Winston Churchill and is now owned by the National Trust – another building to be visited in your car.

The River Darent runs through the town, and actually starts close to Westerham and in times gone by it used to power several mills.
