Sunbury-on-Thames, or Sunbury for short, has been around since about 10BC. Urns from the Bronze Age have been found in the area and so has a charter from 962. Its name is believed to be from the Saxon leader Sunna, from whom Sunnanbyrig came about – Sunna’s Stronghold. Charles Dickens mentioned Sunbury in his book Oliver Twist, when he writes about Saint Mary’s Church on the river, and the nearby Ferry House.

Several ghosts are said to be seen in buildings around Sunbury: the ghost of a young girl murdered by soldiers in the old Castle Inn (now Cafe Rouge); that of an elderly lady who killed herself in the Stoner Cottage; and the last is of Admiral Lord Hawke, who is said to haunt his old home of Hawke House.

Use your car to travel around these haunts, and see if you can’t spot an ethereal being during the night. Why not take a drive to the Sunbury Walled Garden, believed to have been built in 1714, and containing many beautiful gardens and displays.
