Local Information for Brompton
Brompton can be found in the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and boasts many landmarks.
Brompton Cemetery, managed by the Royal Parks, is one of the Magnificent Seven (a group of cemeteries built around London as part of an initiative in the 1800s to provide large, modern cemeteries; the inner-city cemeteries being attached mostly to churches could no longer provide a dignified or hygienic way to bury the dead). It has featured in a number of movies, and people nowadays use it more as a park than a place to remember the deceased inside. Beatrix Potter took many of her animal’s names from tombstones in the cemetery.
The Holy Trinity is a church in Brompton, credited with initiating the first Alpha course. The creator of Alpha, Nicky Gumbel, has been the vicar of the church since 2005. The church was consecrated in 1829, after a three year construction period, has undergone several rebuilds in its time.
On Brompton Road, next to the Victoria and Albert Museum, lies the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, more popularly (but incorrectly) known as The Oratory. Consecrated in 1884, it is the second largest Roman Catholic church in London, after Westminster Cathedral.
From there, take a drive in your car to the Royal Brompton Hospital (formerly the Hospital for Consumption and Diseases of the Chest) and look around the hospital that took in people suffering from tuberculosis (consumption) – at the time, turned away from other hospitals as there was no cure.
