Local Information for Esher
Esher is home to Claremont House – a stately home built in 1774, (the first house on the land was built in 1708). One of these since-demolished houses gave the current one the name ‘Claremont House’, from the owner at the time – Earl of Clare – and when he died his widow sold the estate to the founder of the British Empire in India, Robert Clive.
Clive of India reportedly spent £100 000 on building the current house, but died the year it was finished. It was then bought by the crown, as a wedding gift for Princess Charlotte, daughter of George IV. Sadly she died while giving birth to a son, who also died, the next year. Her husband, Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg, retained ownership until his death in 1865, even though he moved out in 1831 when he became King of the Belgians.
King Leopold’s niece, Queen Victoria-to-be, borrowed the house from time to time, and she in turn lent it to the exiled French King Louis-Philippe and Queen Marie-Amelie after the 1848 revolution. Queen Victoria bought the house as a wedding present for her son Leopold, Duke of Albany. Their son Charles became a German citizen and served as a general for the Germans in WWI. This prevented Charles from inheriting the house when Queen Victoria died, and the Public Trustee later sold the house – ironically, it is now owned by a wealthy German.
