Local Information for Ewell

Ewell is a village in the Borough of Epsom and Ewell in the County of Surrey. Situated close to the border of Greater London it forms part of suburbia. The village still retains a lot of its rural character.

Ewell stands at the head of the Hogshill River, a tributary of the Thames, and the spring is thought to be sacred dating back into pre-history. The old Roman Road, Stane Street, deviated slightly from its traditional straight line to pass the spring. Bronze age remains have been found in Ewell and it is believed a religious site was already present at the time of the Romans arrival.

Tunnels dating back to the English Civil War exist under the village but are poorly documented and are inaccessible.

The most notable landmark in the village is Bourne Hall. This architecturally impressive building in the centre of the village is a circular building with a central glass dome and hosts among other things a public library and a subterranean theatre.

The Borough of Epsom and Ewell was rated the most desirable place to live in the UK in 2005 by a British television programme.

Pimlico is pleased to be home to one of the Tate Galleries, the Tate Britain. It is located on the Tate’s original premises on Milbank and opened in 1897 as the National Gallery of British Art. Local information for Worcester Park

A suburb of London, Worcester Park is in the North West of the London Borough of Sutton. Worcester Park takes its name from the 4th Earl of Worcester who was appointed as the keeper of the Great Park in 1606.

The area is well served by local transport links making it ideal for commuters. Worcester Park is served by regular bus services to Kingston and Sutton, as well as to Heathrow Airport and Croydon. Epsom Coaches also run a bus service to Epsom and Ewell from Worcester Park.

Local Information for Whetstone

Whetstone is located in the borough of Barnet, in the area adjoining Totteridge. Whetstone is a small residential area that has maintained a friendly, welcoming village atmosphere.

In medieval times, Whetstone was an important staging post for stagecoaches. Today, it is just minutes from any of London’s famous sights such as the London Eye or the Royal Air Force Museum.

Local Information for Selsdon

Selsdon is a suburb of the London Borough of Croydon. It was developed in the 1920’s and 1930’s and has many Art Deco houses.

The area used to be part of the Selsdon Park Estate, a well known hunting and shooting area. Selsdon Wood still borders one side of the residential area and retains the character of a historical woodland with its ancient hedges. Deer and other forms of wildlife can still be found in the wood. Concerns were raised at the rapid development of the village and this led to the formation of a 200 acre nature reserve and bird sanctuary, which was opened in 1936.

One mile from Selsdon is the town of Addington. Here you will find Addington Palace, an 18th century mansion house with substantial grounds and gardens landscaped by ‘Capability’ Brown. The palace became the home to six Archbishops of Canterbury in the 19th century. It is now owned by a private company who took it over for development as a conference and banqueting venue, health farm and country club. The palace is surrounded by golf courses and a park and is now a popular wedding venue.

Local Information for Tolworth

Just a short drive in your car from London, is the village of Tolworth, located in the borough of Kingston Upon Thames. This mostly residential area was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, as Taleorde. Tolworth Farm has been a working farm since the Domesday Book times, and a manor on the farm was once owned by Peter da Tolworth. It dates back to Medieval Times! In the 1500s, however, stone from the farm and manor was taken to build the new Nonsuch Palace nearby – and the grand manor was downgraded to a farm once more.

Actor Alan Wheatley, an actor from the 1950’s, was made popular through his portrayal of The Sheriff of Nottingham in the television series Robin Hood. Born in Tolworth, Wheatley was the first person to be shot by a Dalek in another popular television series, Doctor Who, in 1964.

The shopping centre to go to in Tolworth is the Broadway. Located on Broadway, it is highlighted by a huge tower – Tolworth Tower – which now houses, amongst other things, a Travelodge Hotel. The tower is almost 81 metres tall, with the ground floor of the 22 floors presently home to a Marks and Spencer. Park your car in the ample parking station and spend the day browsing the shops that line Broadway and perhaps rest with a coffee.

Art-book publisher Taschen has included Tolworth Tower in its book of ‘Boring Postcards’, so perhaps your day out should not include a sight-seeing tour of the tower from your car! Radio Jackie has its antenna on top of the tower, and its offices and studios are located on Broadway too. Radio Jackie is now an independent local radio station, but began its life as a pirate station. It broadcasts to south west London and north Surrey.

Local Information on Leyton

The name Leyton literally translates to literally mean “settlement on the River Lea, and is the heart of the Lea Valley. Sports are certainly a mainstay in the community, and its sits just outside of Olympic Park for the 2012 games. Shopping is abundant, primarily in the markets and department stores of surrounding areas, but growth is on the near horizon.

Large scale redevelopment has been started in the area of Leyton, and continues today to work with the inner city and merge it with the more modern homes. The larger multi-family high rises are in the process are being demolished, and other amenities being built to accommodate the needs of the families of Leyton. As the future begins to look brighter for one of the poorer areas of London, the upcoming events schedule will help in reviving the local economy.

Teddington Local Information

Teddington is located on the River Thames, and is perhaps most well known for the Teddington Lock, the longest lock on the Thames, which marks the highest point the tides reach on the Thames. Take a drive in your car and visit the lock, also known as Teddington Lock Complex, due to the presence of a weir and footbridge as has been three locks over the years. Construction of the first lock began in 1810 and it was completed with the weir in 1812. This was a timber lock and was repaired in 1825.

In 1856 the lock was rebuilt with stone and the skiff lock was added at this time. 1869 saw the addition of a boat slide and eventually the barge lock (which is also the largest lock on the river) was added in 1905-1905. The iron girder footbridge (linking the town of Ham on the Surrey side of the riverbank to the lock island) and the suspension bridge (linking the lock island the Teddington) were added in 1887 and 1889 respectively. Park your car and walk the footbridges admiring the scenery of the Thames from Teddington Lock.

Teddington is found in the London borough of Richmond on Thames and stretches from the banks as far in as Bushy Park. The only volunteer lifeboat station on the river was opened in 2001 (operational in 2002) and is situated at Teddington. The Teddington Lifeboat Station is only one of four on the Thames so park your car and discover it today!

Popular belief holds that the name Teddington is derived from ‘tide’s end town’, but others believe that it stems from Saxon and Norman times named for an Old English tribal leader – the town being Todyngton or Tutington. There is some evidence to suggest that the town was inhabited as long ago as Roman times, but the first known settlement was in the Saxon era. In the 1300s the land was owned by the Abbot of Westminster.

Local Information for Lambeth

Lambeth is a suburb in the borough of Lambeth – although the borough is now sometimes called Waterloo after the rail station in the area. The viaduct for the station separates the former village centre from the Thames. Lambeth appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Lanchei, and was an ancient settlement opposite The Palace of Westminster known as Lambeth Marsh.

The ‘beth’ in the name Lambeth means ‘a landing on the river. Since the 1400s, the Archbishop of Canterbury has had his official home at Lambeth Palace, in Lambeth Marsh, with the village itself a home for the boatmen who worked in the City of London and Westminster. Park your car by the Thames opposite the Palace, and look across the water to it. Then drive your car to the Palace and explore its grounds.

The Archbishops came and went by water (the Thames), giving rise to the ‘beth’.

Lambeth Palace was acquired by the Bishops of Canterbury around 1200. The oldest part of the palace is the Early English Tower, with Lollard’s Tower dates back to 1440 and was utilised as a prison until the 1600s. The brick gatehouse goes back to 1495, and it is thought that the fig tree in the courtyard was the White Marseille planted in 1525, by Reginald Cardinal Pole, who lay in state for 40 days after his death in 1558.

The church of Saint Mary-at-Lambeth was built in about 1850, and it is the final resting home for many bishops, and the famous botanist and gardener (although to call him a ‘gardener’ is to call Michael Schumacher ‘someone who drives a car’) John Tradescant, his son, and William Bligh. Although no longer a church, it is now the Museum of Garden History. Drive around Lambeth in your car and discover its hidden delights today!
