Local Information for Brockley
Brockley is located within the Borough of Lewisham in South East London. The area was largely agricultural until the 19th Century. The oldest cottages in Brockley date back to 1833 when the town began to develop as a residential area. The railway built on the site of the old Croydon canal provides a fast link for local residents into central London.
Hilly Fields in Brockley, as well as boasting a stone circle, provides marvelous views of Kent and Docklands. The park was a regular meeting place for the Suffragette movement between 1907 and 1914.
Brockley is very popular with artists. Goldsmith’s, part of the University of London, is situated here. Five previous winners of the Turner prize were educated here as were almost a quarter of all those shortlisted for the award since it began in 1984.
As well as several new cafes, bars and restaurants, the Brockley Jack, a late Victorian pub, has a fringe theatre upstairs. Brockley also has an Edwardian ballroom that hosts monthly jive nights.
Singers Kate Bush, Gabrielle and Bobby Valentino have all been residents of Brockley as was comedian Spike Milligan. Suffragette Emily Davidson also lived for a time in the town.
