local information for Kingston upon Thames

Kingston upon Thames is a busy riverside, suburban town on the borders of London and Surrey. The town is situated in the Royal borough of Kingston upon Thames, in London. Originally an ancient market town, it is located 10 miles south west of Charing Cross.

Kingston is rich in history. It was occupied in roman times, Saxon kings were crowned there and the town received its first Royal charter from King John in 1208. You can still see The Lovekyn Chapel, founded in 1309 by Edward Lovekyn, It is the only private chantry chapel in the country to survive the Reformation. Edward IV’s charter gave the town borough status in 1481. Today the town is a bustling retail centre with a small number of commercial offices. There’s a wide selection of bars and restaurants along the banks of the River Thames.

One of the more unusual sights in Kingston is a sculpture called ‘Out of Order’. This sculpture by David Mach shows several disused red telephone boxes that have been tipped up to lean against one another in an arrangement resembling dominoes.

Other things to do in the area include taking a walk across Kingston Bridge to explore Hampton Court Palace. Watching a game of rugby at Kingston rugby club, one of the oldest surviving rugby clubs, originating in 1887 or enjoying an afternoon of rowing on the River Thames.

Bayswater is located in the London borough of Westminster and is home to a large number of hotels and a very diverse population – among them, Americans, Greeks, Arabs and Brazilians. There have been many famous residents in Bayswater, including Winston Churchill, Alexander Flemming, Stella McCartney, Keira Knightly and Sting (Sting’s wife Trudie, lived two doors down in a basement apartment). Tour Bayswater in your car and see if you can locate any old homes of the rich and famous.

At the time of writing for the Domesday Book in 1086 the area now known as Bayswater was owned by the Abbey of Westminster with its most notable tenant being Bainiardus. He is thought to be the same person who was a friend of William I, or William the Conqueror and gave his name to Baynard’s Castle. It is said that the springs that are located close by watered the cattle of Baynard as well as his home and castle. Hence, the name Bayswater stems from that – Baynard’s Water – Bayswater. Travel around Bayswater in your car rental and try to find where the castle once stood now long gone.

Nowadays, Bayswater is made up of Georgian stucco terraces and garden squares with properties ranging from studio apartments and flats to expensive apartments. Some of the apartments were purpose built during the wars and there is also a large council estate that has now almost all been sold off.

The headquarters of Opus Dei are also located in Bayswater. Known formally as the Prelature of the Holy Cross and Opus Dei, this Catholic organization teaches the beliefs that everyone is called to holiness and the ordinary life is a path to sanctity. Drive around Bayswater in your car and see the sites today!

Battersea is located in the London borough of Wandsworth a short drive in your car rental from Charing Cross. Spend a day visiting the sites of Battersea in your car rental and truly appreciate this old London suburb.

Saint Mary’s Church in Battersea is believed to be on the site of regular Christian worship for over 1000 years – even to this day – and is said to be one of the oldest consecrated ground on the banks of the Thames. The original church was built in 800AD, with the current church dating back to 1777.

The crypt contains the family of Benedict Arnold (and the man himself) – the person famous for swapping sides during the American Revolutionary War and attempting to hand West Point to the British poet, painter and printmaker William Blake was married in the church; after telling his wife-to-be Catherine and her parents about a refused proposal, Catherine expressed sympathy to him.

He asked her “Do you pity me?” When she replied that she indeed did he responded “Then I love you.” She became an important part in his personal and working lives and he taught her to read and write. Tour Battersea in your car rental and discover the old church building for yourself.

Pick your Sky TV Pack for £16 50 and receive £25 Tesco Gift Card in Balham

July 26th, 2009 by eShop600

Sky Digital TV Packages and Vodafone mobile phone and broadband deals and offers for Balham, South London

Get Sky Sports for only £9 and Free Broadband when you purchase the Sky+ HD Box for only £49. Also for only £16.50 per month you can choose your own Sky TV Pack

Get the Nokia N97 Mobile Phone FREE

Balham is an inner south London neighbourhood with many Victorian terraced houses now highly sought after by families wishing to live close to London. This is also helped by the fact that Balham has a rail/tube interchange and means easy access to both the West End and London. As a consequence, Balham has lost some of its working-class atmosphere; the effect is doubled because of wealthier families leading to more upper class establishments in town.

Take your car into town and dine at one of the fine restaurants that now call Balham home. The Bedford (pub) is famous for its live entertainment, so perhaps after dinner you could take your car rental for a pint and some comedy. Then perhaps browse a shop, well known for being almost the last of its kind in south east England – My Back Pages, an independent bookstore. Stocking everything from new to old, second hand and antiquarian, My Back Pages is the place to see for books.

The area has been settled since time of the Saxons, with Balham Hill and Balham High Road following the line of the ancient Roman road Stane Street, nowadays called the A24 to Chichester. In the 1600s, Balham was mentioned as alternatively Ballham, Balham Manor or Balham Hill.

Balham is located mostly in the London borough of Wandsworth and is sandwiched between four commons found in south London: Wandsworth, Clapham, Tooting Graveney and Tooting Bec. Even though they are distinct areas many people (including locals and their council) refer to the last two as ‘Tooting Common’.

Sky have some great offers on at the moment. You can get the Sky+ HD Box with FREE Broadband and Sky telephone if you join Sky TV today. You also get a Tesco Gift Card worth £25.

Sky TV Packages and Sports only £9 when you join in Ashtead Surrey

July 26th, 2009 by eShop600

Sky Digital TV Packages and Vodafone mobile phone and broadband deals and offers for Ashtead, Surrey, London

Get Sky Sports for only £9 and Free Broadband when you purchase the Sky+ HD Box for only £49

Get the Nokia N97 Mobile Phone FREE

Ashtead is a large village located on the Surrey Green Belt in London. The Green Belt is a strip of land that is designated not to be developed so as to preserve some natural habitat around areas of urban development. These green areas may be simply farmland or parks and reserves. Take a drive out to Ashtead in your car rental and see how tranquil city living can be!

Ashtead is home to Ashtead Common, a wooded area measuring 181 hectares, just to the north of Ashtead village. Ashtead Common forms part of a larger area that is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) – the Epsom and Ashtead Commons. The large community of breeding birds located on the common has been instrumental in its being a SSSI, and the rare invertebrates that live in the decaying ancient trees have also meant it is a National Nature Reserve. It also contains a wooded area that contains 2,300 oaks that are between 300 and 400 years old!

A Roman villa and some tile works have ensured the common is also home to ‘scheduled ancient monuments’ as well (so it is safe to say that Ashtead has been inhabited since Roman times). Definitely one not to be missed – park your car rental and have a look around. Ashtead Common separates Ashtead from Epsom, and the M25 separates Ashtead from Leatherhead. Ashtead Common is one area that locals refer to when speaking of Ashtead, the other two are The Village (The Village Centre, around the Street) and Lower Ashtead.

They also talk about Ashtead Park, Ashtead Heath and Ashtead Downs. Lower Ashtead is a flatter area just before the common is reached and contains a park, a youth club and housing estates, all built near the railway station

Free Broadband and Nokia N97 when you get Sky HD Box in Aldgate

July 25th, 2009 by eShop600

Sky TV Digital and Vodafone mobile phone and broadband deals and offers for Aldgate, London

Get the Nokia N97 Mobile Phone FREE

Back in the day when walls surrounded London and gates were the means by which people entered or exited the city, Aldgate was the easternmost gateway. It led from London to the city of Whitechapel and East End. There was a gate over the road as far back as Roman times, even before the city walls were constructed. It was a bit of a traffic problem and was rebuilt 1108-1147, and 1215. In 1607-1609 it was completely rebuilt and eventually taken down in 1761.

The name comes from Ale-gate, which literally means ‘open to all’, because there were no tolls at this gate (unusual in itself). The moat around the wall today forms the line of Houndsditch a street in London that connects Aldgate to Bishopsgate. The name is first mentioned in the 1200s, and refers to the fact that dead dogs were disposed of in the ditch. There is only one street in Aldgate and it is only 50 metres long, and it only has two buildings on it! Drive down the street in your car rental and be a part of history.

The spelling Aldgate did not come in until about 1486. There were apartments on top of the gate and at one time they were the home of Geoffrey Chaucer while he was a customs official from 1374-1386. On grounds just inside the gate, Queen Matilda (wife of Henry I) founded the Augustinian Priory of Holy Trinity Aldgate in 1108.

London’s oldest synagogue is in Beavis Marks, found in Aldgate and dates back to 1698 when the Jews were welcomed back to London by Oliver Cromwell (after being thrown out in 1290 by King Edward I). Drive past (or stop in) in your car and inspect this historic old building

Tooting, in south London, is a cosmopolitan area which dates back to the time of the Romans. Its name means “dwelling of the sons of Tota”. A Roman settlement grew on Stane Street which ran from London to Chichester, which passed through Tooting.

Since the days of the Roman Empire, this land passed hands several times. In the 7th century, it belonged to the Abbey of Chertsey. Edward the Confessor handed the land to the viking Suene in 10th century, eventually being returned to the Abbey by the 11th century.

The arrival of trains to the area saw the area develop in the early 20th century. While some Victorian and Edwardian houses can be found in the area, much of Tooting’s homes reflect the construction boom of the Twenties and Thirties.

Tooting Bec Lido, London’s largest open air swimming pool, has been popular with the district’s residents since opening in 1906.

Tooting is home to a number of shops as well as the stalls of Tooting Markets. Open Monday to Saturday, the markets contain an eclectic mix of sellers. Those looking for bargains will not be disappointed as it offers everything from fresh seafood to tattoos.

Vodafone Shop Tottenham North London Nokia N97 Get it Free along with Sky

Sky TV Digital and Vodafone mobile phone and broadband deals and offers for Tottenham, London

Tottenham, in North London, is perhaps best known as being the home of White Hart Lane, Tottenham Hotspurs’ home ground. The area has a rich history which spans back more than a thousand years. Its location, along Ermine Street,an ancient Roman route, saw Tottenham develop between High Cross and Tottenham Hale, now known as Monument Way.

It is believed to have once been a farm belonging to Tota, who was the town’s namesake. In the 12th century, it was home to 70 labouring families who worked for the Lord of the Manor of Toteham, as it was known then. All Hallow’s Church, the area’s oldest building, was built around this time by the Normans and can be visited in your car.

The area developed a reputation as a retreat for London’s wealthy merchants and aristocracy during the Tudor period. Henry VIII was a visitor to Bruce Castle and is believed to have joined hunts in Tottenham Wood. The Grade I listed Bruce Castle, built in the 16th century, now houses a local history museum.

The arrival of trains to the area in the late 19th century saw Tottenham transformed from a secluded haven for the upper and middle classes into a vast working class suburb.

Sky TV Digital and Vodafone mobile phone and broadband deals and offers for South Lambeth, London

Get the Nokia N97 Mobile Phone FREE

South Lambeth, in the London Borough of Lambeth, is an urban residential area which includes the districts of Vauxhall, Kennington, Oval and Stockwell.

Until the 14th century, these areas made up the Manor of South Lambeth, which was owned by the crown. The area of Vauxhall was gifted to Sir Roger D’Amory in 1317 by King Edward II, while his son King Edward III gifted his eldest child, Edward ‘The Black Prince’ with Kennington, Oval and Stockwell.

For more than 500 years, the areas were used as country retreats for wealthy London merchants and the aristocracy. The arrival of rail in the mid-19th century saw the areas transform into middle-class London commuter towns.

In recent years, South Lambeth has developed into a multi-cultural cosmopolitan community. Many refer to the area as “Little Portugal”, in honour of its growing Portuguese community who have enriched the area. Many Portuguese shops, bars and restaurants can be found on South Lambeth Road.

South Lambeth Road is the area’s main shopping area and is home some of London’s best delicatessens and restaurants that reflect menus from around the globe. Whether you fancy Indian, Spanish or African cuisine, you will be spoiled for choice.
