Local Information for Kennington

Map powered by MapPress

Comfortably situated in the borough of Lambeth, Kennington is a largely working class town in the heart of what is known as The Oval. Edward III gave the area now known as Kennington to his oldest son Edward known widely as “The Black Prince” who built a large royal palace on an expansive piece of land that remains to this day.

Kennington Park and St. Mark’s Churchyard now cover the area known as Kennington Common. Back in 1796, the Surrey County Gallows was used for the execution of nine leaders of the Jacobite Rebellion. Today, the area is the site for much less gruesome activities, and includes green space and recreational areas for the many families that reside there.

There is much work to do in Kennington as the schools and jobs are not up to par with the surrounding areas. Homes are modest, and most of the shopping and eateries are centrally located in the town center for convenience.

Kennington is probably most famous for the Oval cricket ground and the Imperial War Museum.

Kingston upon Thames is a busy riverside, suburban town on the borders of London and Surrey. The town is situated in the Royal borough of Kingston upon Thames, in London. Originally an ancient market town, it is located 10 miles south west of Charing Cross.

Kingston is rich in history. It was occupied in roman times, Saxon kings were crowned there and the town received its first Royal charter from King John in 1208. You can still see The Lovekyn Chapel, founded in 1309 by Edward Lovekyn, It is the only private chantry chapel in the country to survive the Reformation. Edward IV’s charter gave the town borough status in 1481. Today the town is a bustling retail centre with a small number of commercial offices. There’s a wide selection of bars and restaurants along the banks of the River Thames.

One of the more unusual sights in Kingston is a sculpture called ‘Out of Order’. This sculpture by David Mach shows several disused red telephone boxes that have been tipped up to lean against one another in an arrangement resembling dominoes.

Other things to do in the area include taking a walk across Kingston Bridge to explore Hampton Court Palace. Watching a game of rugby at Kingston rugby club, one of the oldest surviving rugby clubs, originating in 1887 or enjoying an afternoon of rowing on the River Thames.

local Information for Fenchurch Street

When one mentions Fenchurch Street the first thing you might think of is Monopoly – and how a train station can have anything even remotely interesting. But Fenchurch Street is a very interesting street and you can also admire the mix of both old, stone buildings and new buildings of concrete and glass. The road joins with Aldgate at one end, at Lombard Street. In fact, Fenchurch Street is one of the main streets running through Aldgate. At the western end of Fenchurch Street, you’ll find Gracechurch Street.

Number 71 Fenchurch Street is found the Lloyds Register of Shipping – the front of the building is grade II listed and was built in 1901 – and the annual journal of Lloyds Registry was published here in times gone by. At the intersection with Lime Street was a church that had been designed by Christopher Wren – it was demolished in 1878, but a previous church is believed to have stood on the site as far back as 1198.

The station itself was built in 1854, for the London and Blackwall Railway, and was the first station to be built in the city – the current building is the second station (replacing the first as it was smaller, and located in the Minories), with the first station built in 1841.

The second station was built to service the London Tilbury and Southend Railway, as well as those of the London and Blackwall Railway. The (new) station has four platforms on two islands, raised up on a viaduct. In the book by Douglas Adams, ‘So Long and Thanks For All The Fish’, the character Fenchurch was named as such because that was where she was conceived.

Raynes Park is located in the London borough of Merton, just a short drive by car from Charing Cross and sandwiched between Wimbledon and New Malden. Raynes Park is a typical commuter suburb – relatively prosperous and lower middle class to middle class. Further, as potential buyers have been forced to look outside London, prices of property have increased. The area is desirable due to its rail links, and the fact that Wimbledon has previously had even more expensive house prices. On the other side of Raynes Park are more expensive houses with golf courses and gated estates, so Raynes Park is as close as you can get to London while still in an affordable price bracket. Explore the boundaries of the suburb in your car, and experience the best of London without breaking the bank.

Tubby Hayes was a jazz musician who was born and raised in Raynes Park. Best known for his saxophone playing, Hayes learned the violin from his father, a BBC studio violinist. When he was 10 years old, Hayes began playing the piano, and then sax at eleven. By fifteen, Hayes was playing professionally. When he eventually died of heart disease brought on by a drug habit, Hayes left behind a collection of recordings that are now much sought after by enthusiasts.

Earlier on, Raynes Park was part of Merton, and the area remained largely rural until well into the 1800s. In 1838 the railway arrived, and today it splits the suburb in two. In the 1870s, however, Cottenham was north of the line and Raynes Park was to the south. The land was owned by one Richard Garth, who also held the manor of the adjacent parish of Morden, and planned a garden suburb much in the same manner as Merton Park to the east. The previous owners of the property, the Rayne family, gave rise to the name of the current suburb. Take a drive around the area in your car and see the sites of Raynes Park today!

There are in actual fact three ‘Norwood’s – West (sometimes referred to as Norwood), South Norwood and Upper Norwood. Drive around all three Norwoods in your car and explore the history found in the area.

West Norwood is bordered by South Norwood and although the two are in different postcodes they are in the same borough of Lambeth (Upper Norwood only partly). West Norwood, together with Gipsy Hill, Thurlow Park and Knight’s Hill are part of the Norwood town centre.

West Norwood is primarily residential, however Upper Norwood is practically all residential, and it is bordered by West and South Norwood. Upper Norwood is almost completely within the borough of Croydon but it also stretches into the boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark and Bromley. Previously Upper Norwood was located in the district of Surrey. Upper Norwood is one of the highest areas in London and the land used to house the Great North Wood – in fact, the name Norwood is a contraction of the name ‘North Wood’, and it is said that the wood for the boat sailed by Sir Francis Drake was taken from this forest. Upper Norwood at its most eastern point is known as Crystal Palace.

Take a drive from Upper Norwood in your car to South Norwood located wholly within the borough of Croydon. The most northern part of South Norwood is Beulah Heights, part of the clay ridge known as the Northern Downs. Previously, Handley’s Brickworks and its seven towers dominated the town, and many of the workers and their families now live in the less wealthy area to the south east. The wealthier residents live in the private estate located to the north west of the railway. It is not far to drive around in your car, before you find one of many of the parks and reserves in South Norwood – make plans for a picnic today!
