Local Information for Kennington
Comfortably situated in the borough of Lambeth, Kennington is a largely working class town in the heart of what is known as The Oval. Edward III gave the area now known as Kennington to his oldest son Edward known widely as “The Black Prince” who built a large royal palace on an expansive piece of land that remains to this day.
Kennington Park and St. Mark’s Churchyard now cover the area known as Kennington Common. Back in 1796, the Surrey County Gallows was used for the execution of nine leaders of the Jacobite Rebellion. Today, the area is the site for much less gruesome activities, and includes green space and recreational areas for the many families that reside there.
There is much work to do in Kennington as the schools and jobs are not up to par with the surrounding areas. Homes are modest, and most of the shopping and eateries are centrally located in the town center for convenience.
Kennington is probably most famous for the Oval cricket ground and the Imperial War Museum.
