Local Information for Brooklands

Map powered by MapPress

Near Weybridge, in the Surrey Borough of Elmbridge, lies Brooklands. A disused racing circuit and airfield, it is now a museum for the same. Opened in 1907, Brooklands Aerodrome and Race Circuit were brought to life by Hugh Locke-King and was the first custom-built banked track in the world. And, by only about two months, it was the second oval track for cars.

Along the centre of the track was a dotted line – called the fifty foot line – and by driving over the line, a driver could theoretically take corners without steering. During WWII fuel rationing meant the races had to be stopped, and by the time the war was finished the new cars were deemed too fast for the banked track. A preservation order in 2001 meant the remaining sections of the track were protected.

Brooklands Aerodrome is also one of England’s first airfields. In 1908, it hosted the first flight of a British plane by a British pilot. In 1910 the first British flying school was opened, and in 1912 Sopwith School of Flying opened. Later that year the Sopwith Aviation Company opened. Now, the first Concorde ever built is housed here, and many of the planes kept here were built at Brooklands.

The Brooklands Museum now operates out of here and the Brooklands Society proudly announces that they ‘saved Brooklands’. Take your visitors to Brooklands in your car and show them this historic airfield and track

A major attraction is the dinosaur park, built in the early 1850’s, with large Victorian concrete and cast iron dinosaurs. It’s thought these may have been the inspiration for Michael Crichton’s novel Jurassic Park! The dinosaurs fell into disrepair during the 1980’s and 90’s but were renovated using a grant from the UK Lottery in the early 2000s.

Crystal Palace Railway Station is served by trains from two major London stations, Victoria and London Bridge. Although not currently on an underground line, it is rumoured that the Jubilee line may include Crystal Palace in the future.

Local Information for Holloway

Map powered by MapPress

Holloway is an inner city district and lies in the London Borough of Islington and follows the line of what is known as Holloway Road. The names origins cannot be agreed upon and many believe it was named after a dip in the road that developed from standing water and the passage of animals.

The famous Andover Estate is located within Holloway, and is now sadly a haven for many of London’s graffiti artists. Best known for its large prison HMP Holloway was built in 1852 and housed both male and female prisoners. Today, the prison houses only women and is the United Kingdom’s largest of its kind. On a more positive note the area is on tap to be regenerated with the help of the 2012 Olympic Games and a push for new business.

Sports are a big draw in Holloway, and the Arsenal Football Club has now moved into the new Asburton Grove Stadium. This venue is the third largest only after Wembley and Twickenham stadiums and seats more than 60,000 guests after its grand opening in the summer of 2006.

Local Information for Dartford

Map powered by MapPress

Dartford is the principle town in the Borough of Dartford and derives its name as it lies in the valley through which the river Darent flows. The old Roman road from London to Dover also passes through the valley (later called Watling Street), but 100 million years ago the whole area was covered by an inland sea, resulting in modern day chalk and flint deposits. The chalk is hundreds of feet deep, soft near the surface and the subject of mining for many years.

Findings from the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages have all been found, as has a Roman villa, and during the Middle Ages the area became a market town (this, and the proximity to the hops fields of Kent, have meant that Dartford has a rich history of brewing traditional beers and ales). The Dominicans and Franciscans built hospitals here to care for the sick and elderly, particularly those passing through the town. In 1415, before the Battle of Agincourt, Henry V marched through the town and in 1422 his body was taken to the Holy Trinity Church in Dartford where the Bishop of Exeter, Edmund Lacey, performed the funeral service.

In 1452 the Duke of York and his ten thousand men awaited a confrontation with Henry VI. The Duke surrendered to the King at Dartford – York Road today marks the place of the camp. Dartford Grammar School began in 1576

Local Information for Balham

Map powered by MapPress

Balham was a small hamlet of country houses and farms until about 200 years ago and was mainly located on an old Roman road of Stane Street as part of the Streatham parish. The town grew relatively quickly as travel became easier around Balham Hill in the early 19th century. The Pimlico and Crystal Palace Railway opened in 1856 and the town center continued its growth southward to its present location. Save for a few spots of World War II bomb damage, the street patterns have remained the same.

A chapel opened in 1808, and 47 years later became its own parish, with many churches surrounding the area. Today, Balham has a thriving shopping central and the popular Holdrons department store. A home known as the Heaver Estate has become Balhams first real conservation area, and at nearby Hydes Farm, pigs have become famous for their size.
Balham even has their own scandal when Charles Bravo was poisoned at the Priory and the case has never been solved.

Local Information for West Molesey

Map powered by MapPress

West Molesey is a village in the Borough of Elmbridge in Surrey. It is situated on the banks of the River Thames. Until the 1930’s it was primarily an agricultural community with four large farms and several market gardens still in full production that year. The centre of the village includes St. Peter’s church, a small number of shops and a few pubs and restaurants.

One of the earliest balloon ascents in the history of English aeronautics took place from the grounds of the “Priory”, now Molesey Football Ground, in 1785.

Nearby Molesey Hurst was one of England’s oldest sporting venues providing spectators with prizefighting and horse racing events. Prizefighting was banned here in 1824 but horse racing continued until 1962. Cricket was played here as early as 1723 and you can see a painting of a match at Molesey Hurst in the 1790s hanging in the Long Room at Lords. It was also the location of one of the first games of golf in England. The Molesey Hurst is now known as Hurst Park and is the site of a housing estate.

Located in the London Borough of Waltham Forest is the town of Walthamstow. Forming an ancient path from London to Waltham Abbey are a series of streets passing north-south through Walthamstow and its neighbouring towns (Leyton High Road, Hoe Street, Chingford Road and Chingford Mount). Travel the new roads in your car for an old insight into how people made the trek from the city to the church.

While you have your car stop by the street market held in Walthamstow High Street since 1885, and which lays claim to being the longest street market in Europe at 2.1 kilometres!

The Walthamstow Stadium dog track (technically in Chingford) has a grade II listed Art Deco facade, and is not to be missed – it has been run by the same family since its inception in 1933, and it reportedly has the largest income from gambling, and attendance, in the United Kingdom. The artwork for the album ‘Park Life’ by Blur features the band members at the stadium.

Another must-see is the Walthamstow Village. Drive and park your car, and visit the area voted best urban village by ‘Time Out’ magazine in 2004. Then have a wander and pop into a pub for a quick pint. Or perhaps you could drive your car and discover the beautiful 1920s terraced houses?

Local Information for Chislehurst

Chislehurst is a village in the London Borough of Bromley. The name is derived from the Saxon ‘cisel’ meaning gravel and ‘hyrst’ meaning wooded hill.

Camden Place, now a golf club, is where Napoleon III, the French Emperor, died in exile in 1873. His body was originally buried in St Mary’s church before it was removed to Farnborough Abbey. There is a memorial to him in the woods and many street names in Chislehurst are connected to the imperial family.

One of the local attractions is Chislehurst Caves. These ancient caves were originally used to mine flint and chalk. During the 2nd World War, thousands of people used them as nightly air raid shelters. There is a chapel in the caves and one child was born in the caves during the war. She was given the name Cavina. The caves are said to be haunted.

Jimi Hendrix, The Who and The Rolling Stones have all performed live in the caves and a number of television programmes and films have been filmed there.

Malcolm Campbell, the former land and water speed record holder was born in the village and is buried in St. Nicholas Parish church.

Local Information for Woolwich

Woolwich is a suburb in south-east London, England in the London Borough of Greenwich, on the south side of the River Thames, though the tiny exclave of North Woolwich (which is now part of the London Borough of Newham) is on the north side of the river.

This is a place rich with the history of Britain’s military past. It was home to the Woolwich Dockyard (founded in 1512), the Royal Arsenal (dating back to 1671), the Royal Military Academy (1741) and the Royal Horse Artillery (1793); the town still retains an army base at the Royal Artillery Barracks, and the Royal Artillery Museum. The nearby Greenwich Heritage Centre also houses exhibits relating to the Royal Arsenal.

The combination of optimistic redevelopment of much of Woolwich and the fact that the 2012 Summer Olympics will include Woolwich as a venue for shooting events means changes and a new modern face for the city.
