Local Information for Rotherhithe

n the south-east London Borough of Southwark lies the town of Rotherhithe, so named for (either) ‘landing place for cattle’ or ‘sailor haven’. Rotherhithe is located on a peninsula on the southern bank of the River Thames.

The area is sometimes referred to as ‘Surrey Docks’ due to the Surrey Commercial Docks that once covered the area. Since the 1980s, the area is also called Surrey Quays, but this usually refers to the south of the peninsula. Rotherhithe is also known as Redriff – which is the birthplace of Gulliver, from “Gulliver’s Travels”.

Rotherhithe is connected to the northern bank of the Thames by three tunnels, one of the (the Thames Tunnel to Wapping) was the first underwater tunnel in the world, originally built as a pedestrian tunnel. It is now a tunnel for the underground (rail system). The Rotherhithe Tunnel opened in 1908 and links to Limehouse via a two lane road. The Jubilee Line opened in 1999 and is a railway tunnel to the Canary Wharf in the Isle of Dogs.

Due to the strong Scandinavian presence in the docks, the area still has a thriving community. There are still Nordic influences around, some strong, some vague: community centres, churches, street and building names and architecture all point towards a strong connection formed with trades when the docks existed.

Perhaps you can take your car on a tour of Rotherhithe and find the homes of famous people and places – Max Bygraves and Michael Caine were both born here and at the end of Oliver Twist there is a description of Rotherhithe’s 1800s slum areas.

Local Information for Muswell Hill

The earliest records of Muswell Hill date back to the 12th century. Its name is thought to come from the natural spring that was thought to have miraculous healing properties. Reportedly, a King passing through the area drank from the spring and was cured of his disease. The place then became a pilgrimage for the ill a hurting during medieval times.

Until the 19th century the community saw little growth, and then branchline railway brought connecting service to Finsbury Park and Kings Cross stations. Muswell Hill is located in the London Borough of Haringey.

Built in 1863 as a public recreation facility and entertainment centre, the Alexandra Palace is one of Muswell’s more prominent local attractions. The main hall displays various exhibitions throughout the year and the ice skating rink is surrounded by lights and beautiful landscaping to create a magical backdrop.

Local Information for Whetstone

Whetstone is located in the borough of Barnet, in the area adjoining Totteridge. Whetstone is a small residential area that has maintained a friendly, welcoming village atmosphere.

In medieval times, Whetstone was an important staging post for stagecoaches. Today, it is just minutes from any of London’s famous sights such as the London Eye or the Royal Air Force Museum.
