John Lewis is a chain of upmarket stores in United Kingdom. John Lewis is the name of the person who started these stores. The group of stores is owned by John Lewis Partnership. Starting in 1920, the partnership was formed with the idea that all the permanent staff employees of the group are partners.

The group’s first store was opened in Oxford Street in London in 1964 and it is still present there. Known for their high quality of products the target audience of John Lewis stores is middleclass.

In 1905 ,John Lewis acquired Peter Jones and thus came into existence the group’s second store .After this group has made other acquisitions like taking over the Waitrose in 1937.Acqusion of Waitrose was notable because it was a collection ten shops. Another acquisition by the John Lewis Partnership was done in 1940 of Selfridge Provincial Stores

But shopping in John Lewis departmental stores are not bound only by actual physical presence.

Being a ever evolving company, John Lewis Partnership started offering direct services by a company named Greenbee in 2006.Aprt from these, the John Lewis partnership also boasts of a catalogue division ,three production units and a farm. There are total twenty six departmental stores operating right now and an impressive count of hundred and eighty seven supermarkets.

John Lewis stores gained appreciation from various quarters for its businesses. In 2007 John Lewis departmental stores were chosen as the favourite departmental stores in Britain .And New Year of 2008 came with more recognition as the store accepted ,from the Queen of England, the prestigious Royal Warrant for being the dealers of Haberdashery and Household commodities.
